The way I understand it, their either

    • A mystical order that practices High Magic for their own gains
    • The 'New World Order' that supposedly runs the planet without anyone knowing
    • A combination of the 2

There are actually quite a few definitions of the Illuminati, though I find Robert Anton Wilson's to be perhaps the most entertaining of the bunch. (Also check out The Illuminati Papers by RAW, if you can find it -- it's a bit dated, but still interesting.) Many Masonic-type groups seem to identify themselves as Illuminati to one degree or another. I've heard of at least one political group, Marxist oriented and probably not affiliated with any Masonic group, that also calls itself Illuminati. Conspiracy theorists usually link the Illuminati with something sinister, though since the Nazis and the John Birch Society also take that view, I tend to be rather more skeptical of the conspiracy theories themselves. And who's to say that the whole Illuminati thing isn't just one big practical joke anyway? The irony is that is exactly what the Illuminati may be really about -- doing a good mindfuck and having a huge laugh at everybody! [IMG]

There's a lot of literature on the illuminati.

The one that I heard is that they are a group of people who have attained spiritual perfection who run the world from Argattha - the secret unground city somewhere in India.

They are said to have connections with many various secret societies, and Argattha is one of the places, according to the conspiracy theories that the Templars took refuge.

Hope this helps in the slightest, though I suspect it doesn't.

    Blessings

they are an ancient cult that had members like galileo. it wasnt really a cult back then. it was scientists who were trying to do there work without the church knowing. they met in secret places, and noone knew what they were or who was in it for a long time. but then people started missinterpreting them as a satanic cult and started murdering, stealing, etc. etc. in the name of the illuminati. and to my knowledge they have been long gone for like 400 yrs. you should read angels and demons by dan brown. it is a fiction story, but it gives alot of interesting facts about the illiminatus and there followers.

I would suggest to anyone and everyone to stear clear of Dan Brown - his work is just capatalising in on an already flourishing market of conspiracy fiction.

To be honest, if you want to go down the route of well researched fiction read "Foucalt's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco (same guy who wrote "Name of the Rose"). Not only is it ridiculously well researched but it's also a much more interesting read than Dan Brown.

    Where was I?

Oh yes. The illuminati, according to the conspiracies had LINKS to people like Gallileo and such but did not include these people. There are many secret societies, like for example the Gnostics, Templars, Rosicrucians, Masons, who according to the conspiracies included the sort of men you mention, and these secret societies generally had people at the top of them who ran the group and these men were pawns for the illuminati. So the link is indirect. The Illuminati itself is always said to be a VERY small group (a dozen people or so, or lets make the number more interesting, 13).

According to most conspiracies the illuminati have been around for ALOT longer than 400 years. If you're going to run the world you've got to start out early and this means BEFORE the Templars, Masons, Rosicrucians, and the rest of them can get there. 400 years would be much to young for this seeing as most reasonably powerful mystical societies had already been set up by this point.

    Blessings

    Oh no :)

Shea International Flea Market, which is located on an islet in the middle of the subterranean sea. You can easily buy there any Atlantean book, even in modern translation.

Why read Illumanati "fiction", when you can read Behold a Pale Horse by William Cooper...this book is truly frightening.

Judging at least by the fact that Mr. Cooper included in his book Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which was a counterfeit without a doubt, Behold a Pale Horse is a piece of fiction too, however frightening it may seem.

Just a thought...wouldn't it serve those in question (the illumanati, etc.) best for us all to BELIEVE that the "Protocols" was/is phony? Not agreeing or disagreeing, just sayin', can't always believe what's out there, either way. I didn't accept all of "Behold", but it was food for thought and supposedly real...

Sure it would. And I guess the opposite idea, namely, that the Protocols are the real document of a certain Zionist gathering, serves even better, since it distracts the attention of those who believe it from real problems. But in this case, I think, there is no need to believe, because the main source of the Protocols, Maurice Joly’s Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, is well known. The story of the forgery is well known too. Also, the style of the Protocols is so derisive and scoffing that this is obvious that the author, or authors, didn’t write it as a classified plan, but intended to spread it among the public, awaiting the indignant reaction of the Gentile. In no way it could be the official document.

Actually, I am not going to say that Behold is a bad book, but I see no difference between supposedly real books and outright fiction, except that fiction writers are more honest. In some sense, everything is fiction. The real difference is in spirit only.

I got you....and fully agree that in some sense, everything is fiction. Look at the text books we were taught with as youth! Actually, the impact that fiction has on one, metaphorically, shouldn't differ all that greatly from the impact of a work of non-fiction anyway. At least that could be said about the great works of literature, not some grocery store romance novel. My point is, beware that which claims to be non-fiction, as it may be a fraud while also keeping in mind that there may be ulterior motives for an author's writing something as purely a work of "fiction"...
