I prefer a RAW diet, but as far as kibble goes, Innova EVO is my favourite. No grains, high in protien, low in carbs. It is a kibble that is made to mimic a RAW diet (which is pretty stupid, because the whole idea of it being RAW is that it isn't cooked). My cat eats RAW, but I was given a small bag of Innova EVO, and he went nuts over it. Some other okay brands are Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Healthwise, California Natural, Fromm's Four Star, Go! Natural, Foundations, Eaglepack HOLISTICS, etc. Stay away from anything in a large chain petstore or supermarket/grocery store. Stay away from any food that advertises itself on TV commercials. Make sure the main ingredient to the food is a meat MEAL, not just a meat. Make sure it lists specifics --- "chicken" instead of "poultry," and "beef" instead of "meat," and "salmon" instead of "fish," etc. Also ake sure it's naturally preserved -- no ethoxyquin, BHA, or BHT. It's best to stay away from wheat, corn, soy, and by-products. Good luck!
Depends on the cat. Both the cats I had won't touch anything other than Whiskas for some reason. And the one I have right now only eats food made from fish.
i feed my cats on things like chicken, tuna ,fish. but can anyone help me do u know if Iams fund testing on aninals, i have been told that they have and my oldest cat only eats Iams and we r totally screwed if they are.
Iams and Eukanuba are owned by Proctor and Gamble, probably the worst animal testing company in the world. The animal testing that went on in the actual Iams testing facility is now regulated to minimal feeding tests and whatnot --- PETA went in undercover and took horrible pictures that said otherwise, but forgot to mention that they took pictures of the testing facility next door, not Iams'. However, Iams also failed to mention that the testing facility next door was also owned by Proctor and Gamble.
my cat really digs the evolution stuff from http://www.vegancats.com he still digs meat, even though i try to explain to him that commercial cat food is the four Ds, dead diseased dying and disabled and how terrible factory farming is, he doesnt seem to put it together, lol. and i am too lazy to test his urine to find out if hes the 10 % of cats prone to urinary tract problems on a otherwise VERY healthy vegan diet that can prevent many years of aging and disease and has made him wayyy more energetic and kitten-like... so i feed him small amounts of high quality organic meat once a week as a treat to keep everything in balance and prevent any possible health problem. and yeah iams really sucks...
i never knew that iams was that bad. shit this aint good. what do u think i should do with my elderly cat, he is addicted to them . we did try and ween him of them a few months ago but he just wont eat anything else. it seems so silly to me that if big companys like iams etc. which is made for cats test products, and vets thast sell all this stuff and they always suggest it if you cat/dog is ill. i really dont know what 2 do about my cat though. help xxx
just dont feed your cat, lol. no seriously though, dont feed him the stuff for like a day, nothin but water, and hell be fine, then bust out something better and chances are he will gobble it right up, then start the weaning so his body isnt too shocked. you may have to wait 2 days depending on how picky your cat is, but i think it would be worth it, just make sure hes drinking a lot of water and has some other food available to eat if he wants, and chances are hell come around eventually. my cat LOVES the stuff from http://www.vegancats.com, like when we first got it, he totally stuffed his face with it and wouldnt touch the other food when i put out 2 plates for him to chose. so maybe you can try that? its nutritionally complete, much more healthy than typical cat food, organic, and apparently very tasty, and much more pleasing to look at from a human perspective than most cat food.
yeah i will give that a go, hopefully he does though, and like if he doesnt eat the new cat food i will have to put him back on iams cause where he is old and thin i dont want to risk him losing to much weight, as he will find it diffucult to put back on, but thanks for your help xxx
Nutro is a easy to acquire through the larger chain stores i used to work for them and i have a lot of coupons left over that they never asked for back pm me if you are interested and i'm mail them to you all the others mentioned are awesome as well with the exception of the iams, ect...
my kitty likes sensible choice cat food. you can aquire it at most natural food stores. it's a high quality cat food with clean ingredients, and they don't support animal testing like procter and gamble does...i wouldn't want to feed my cat something that other cats were suffering for, you know? just doesn't equate to making a whole lotta sense to me. stay far away from meow mix, purina cat foods, iams, science diet (also supports animal testing), kit n caboodle, etc. basically anything you see on TV or can buy in a major chain grocery store...they all have a lot of unneccesary chemicals as well, which can contribute to urinary tract infections
Don't risk your old kitty's health by trying to change his diet at this point. Try supplementing it with chicken or poultry scraps from your table. They are good for him and easy to digest. (NO BONES and for old kitties the less skin the better.) My cat get's the cheapest for right now. An economic necessity, but when I have any scraps I share with her, and someday when finances are more robust, I think I'll give the Nutro line a shot for both her and the dogs.
Merricks....esp. if you have a picky eater, mix the merrick dry with the canned stuff....it looks like home cooked meals in a can and it scored the highest grade on the pet food ratings when it comes to quality (no by-products, toxic preservatives, etc) and they use organic meat. Iams: My mom always used them until she shared a video with me of their labs (she works in Animal Health for a large pharmo company) of dogs (bassett hounds) with their flesh cut open to test muscle mass (all awake, not under anesthesia) and them sponsoring circuses is a turn off. Nutro: My puppy was started on it and she did quite well, but when the "great pet food recall" of 2006 and 2007 came about alot of their foods were yanked and I'm weary. So yeah....Merricks for puppies and kitties in my opinion.
My cat is addicted to whiskas I tryed to give him some natural cat food but he wouldnt eat it. He would sit there and meow at me lol he attempted to eat it but he just couldnt ... so we went back to whiskas asap Now hes happy enjoying his whiskas LOL I am going to do some more research on diffrent natural foods and see if he would like to try them out ... Ill have to see how that goes
i feed my cats raw, and they are all gleaming with health. just a word of advice though; if trying to change a kitties diet dont let them go without for more than a day, or reduced rations for too many days as they can go into hepatic lipidosis which is a veterinary emergency. if switching foods adding small amount of the new food to the old and persistence is the key tis easier with doggies cos they can go hungry if they get picky, though i have yet to own a dog that would refuse anything vaguely edible
My cat has never been able to tolerate anything other than Purina, which our vet suggested when he started having digestive problems and skin problems. He's a very sensitive boy- 13 years old and very healthy despite his allergy to fleas, sensitive skin, and sensitive stomach. Before, when we fed him the cheap brands like Alley Cat and Dad's, he would get itchy, dry skin, over groom, throw up hair balls, lose hair, and get skin infections (bacterial and fungal- not a pretty site). When we switched him over to Purina, his skin issues cleared up, he stopped throwing up and overgrooming so much, his fur and eyes brightened up, and he basically became a kitten again. Just recently, we added a store brand hairball medicine to his diet, which has pretty much eliminated his hairballs as long as we give it to him every day. This might not apply to long-haired cats, but mine is a Maine Coon Cat, which means he's a very big boy with a lot of hair.
