I grew up watching the awesome show The Monkees. I really like their music to. Does that make me a bad person because I didn't know it was really the fall of real music along with starting commercial/coporate music. So once again I ask does this make me a bad person. Oh and I still like them.

ahh i see, i know nothing of music because they fell under pressure of the music industry and just became an act?

there are plenty of bands out there now that have probably turned down major record labels because they didnt want to do what they label wanted them too.

the monkees did sing their songs...

and they could play instruments [they had live concerts]...the only reason on the first few albums that they did not play instruments is the the record company "needed" the record out at this certain time, so they werent allowed to play their instruemnts, although after like 2 or 3 albuyms, they started to...thats when they got less popoular, but i like their own stuff better...

first off, no monkee has killed themselves.

The Pre-fab Four have a strange place in music, but cannot be denied. They did write their own songs, and played their own instruments. In fact, they were pissed that the show pushed others songs on them, and wouldnt promote songs written by them.

On playing their own instruments, Mike Nesmith said "Man, I'm about to go onstage in front of 40thousand people, and you think I can get away with not playing my own instrument? You gotta be crazy."

The songs they wrote themselves are decent to very good. Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork did write some good songs, when Peter came to the auditions he thought it was a band seeking musician situation. The problem was that neither Mickey nor Davey played much of anything at first, and they were supposed to be the cute lead actors. While Mickey did pick up some basic drumming, Davey Jones was left on tambourine.

Although what one hears on the radio is total bubblegum, their own songs were often very psychedelic, well produced, and often featured sit-ins or side musicians of great talent. Once they complained about the writing of songs, they were often paired with the best writers and given the chance to co-author songs while learning.

Considering the state of TV, telling four hippies to "freak out and be funny" is an offer that most of us would at least ponder!

The Monkees show was cancelled for Gunsmoke to air.

Davey Jones was once chloroformed by members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience while touring together.

Among collaborators: Carol King, Neil Young, Leiber & Stoller

The best of the Monkees work, for me, comes in the form of their movie titled HEAD. Done the same summer as Easy Rider, written by Jack Nicholson, and including a cameo from Frank Zappa, its prime 60s freak out. Try to catch the scene that includes Dennis Hopper in his Billy The Kid/Easy Rider coat! In the flick, they dump the image of bubblegum prefab right off.

Peter Tork still tours with his band, and is a great guy. Check them out if you like, they are called Shoe Suede Blues.

Mike Nez tells a great story about sitting at a table with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Paul McCartney for lunch. Halfway thru the meal, John Lennon sought them out to play his bootleg of the pre-mixes of Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced, the first time anyone at the table had heard of Jimi.

I like the Monkees, hell, ive heard lots worse!!

exactly! i like the monkees, not as much as i used to but i still listen to them from time to time. theres a movie about them, Daydream Believers, its really good, it tells the true story. and Head has got to be one of my favorite movies ever. the album has some really good music on it too. Peter is really cool, he wrote the song, Long title: do I have to do this all over again, its a really good song. they aren't all pop stuff.
