There is misguided prejudice. An overarching prejudice againsts foolishness labels comedy as trajedy and darkens a bright aspect of life. Such as prejudice against some forms of foolishness....
True. Anything right can be done wrong. Either Proverbs or Ecclesiates something verse something says, 'Be thou not righteous overmuch, for why shouldest thou die?' It is a holdover from childhood in all of us, I think, to chose what is sweet. Had our parents never trained us up right, we might go through life chosing to avoid healthy foods in favor of desert. Indeed, some people are like that in the sense that they are always promoting their personal 'deserts'. Prejudice is a mental function that allows us to know and chose things of merit and advantage. If a thing is good, prejudice will call it our own - as in the person who is said to have discriminating taste. In your point about comedy; beware. Years ago I chose against modern comedy for this reason: it became less about funny and more about an attitude that had a negative outlook. Most of what is passed off for comedy in sitcoms, for example, is simply putting other people down. When the choice is mine: when it is a personal matter for me to navigate between good and bad; I will seek out, identify, and chose what is right. In regard of the brighter aspect of life, and being able to determine what that might be, Philippians 4:8 is an invaluable litmus: "Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
St. Paul's word were about men trying to look like women and vice versa. It was about gender identity, not about long hair. Besides, no one wears veils when praying anymore, either. Some of Paul's advice was timeless, but some of it was very specific to his day and age.
"St Paul's Word Were"? Huh? And I wasn't even on anything. St. Paul's words were about. Not Word Were.
One of the reasons I haven't written off christianity completely is because of the reports of first century christians laughing, smiling, and singing on their way to the arena to be torn apart by wild animals. They (assuming the reports are true) were either completely crazy or were so hardwired into the reality of God that nothing on earth could get in the way of the connection. I have to laugh when I see modern christians whining, and screaming "persecution" when someone makes a joke at their expense.
I just realised I origanilly missed the point of this thread. My only access to the internet somedays is at the library, where they only give you an hour, so sometimes I have to skim through the threads pretty quick. On the other hand, if that's all it takes to piss somebody off, fuck 'em.
Modern Christians strike me as a bunch of weak spirited babies. They need to be broken in with a good armagedon with them as the targets. That'll set their pants on fire.
There's a big difference between Christians and puritans. The alleged "persecution" the puritans left England to get away from amounted to this; after Cromwell lost power puritans werent allowed to walk around telling everybody else how to live every little aspect of their lives anymore. That's a control freak's idea of persecution; when people start telling him to fuck off and mind his own business. Puritans are what we're really talking about here.
Thanks, Michael. Choosing what is right is as basic to human nature as breathing. When some people, however, talk a lot of wild, irreverent stuff, they sometimes believe their own hype. Kharakov thinks Christians needs a good Armeggedon. That will come - the Kharakovs of the world will be just as unprepared as the Christians. As to puritans, I don't give them much thought, but NaykidApe's comment brought to mind that all the freedom we enjoy today, we owe to the pilgrim's search for religious and personal freedom.
Puritans I say! (Sorry, I just came up with this spin on where modern "christians" come from, and I haven't beaten it to death yet).
Shit Daniel, I am not even prepared for tomorrow, much less Armeggedon. Seriously though, God prepares my way, I don't. I am sure I will be perfectly prepared for whatever God brings my way, even if God's gotta give me a cram session in demon warfare to get me ready for the dance. And Now We Dance Never join the ranks of the kiss ass suit and tie or the stinking hippie, the future is worth a lie, nothing's worth a fuck, a fuck ain't worth a shit we're only gonna die, here's how we deal with it And Now We Dance like warriors on the battlefield only triumph in a moment of glory ....
There are times when telling someone the truth will lead them astray, for they are not yet prepared to receive knowledge of the truth. This is one of the things that God's discipline teaches.
