visit this site and see just how the Patriot Act is being used to protect "freedom"!!!! http://www.freesherman.org/ and see just how Free is speech?
OMG ITS TEH GOVERNMENT!!!11 RUN FOR YOUR LIVES THERE AFTER YOUR JEWELRY AND YOUR DAUGHTERS' VIRGINITY! RUN!
I like living in a town that is responsible for the "Anti-Patriot Act". Yes, it is against the law to follow the patriot act here.
forgive my ignorance...but how can a state or county overthrow a federal law? I thought only the supreme court could do that by calling it unconstitutional...is it just a symbolic stand against the patriot act?
wow go to http://freesherman.fightcapitalism.net/english/index.html to see why Sherman Austin is in jail. I think that it is a load of shit and he shouldnt be in jail in the first place. The anti Patriot Act should be passed in all 50 states if this country wants to live up to the term "free"
i don't have to worry about your patriot act. i'm canadian and i'm not planning to come visit america in the comeing years. it's too bad your freedoms are being taken away.
I don't know what that guy did but he looked guilty to me. Is that a good enough of reason? Maybe it is that America has too many freedoms and that is what is making them vulnerable. Not that they should be taken away, perhaps modified to just rethought. Something obviously needs to be done to make your country safe, what else would you propose??? -Megara you better be careful using the term ignorant, you how Balbus and LickHERish love using that word. Don't be surprised if they come back at one of your posts with the defense that you yourself admit to being ignorant. -
I didn't actually expect anybody to respond to my question, "What else could be done." In general the sound of "taking away freedoms" sound horrible. Now break it down and look deeper. Take away the freedom of assembly. Wrong. Take away the right for terrorist charities to meet in mosques and not be monitored. Necessary. Before the patriot act FBI was not allowed to monitor mosques that held meetings with known sleepers and terror act fund raisers without probable cause. Does that seem right to anybody? I'm not saying the patriot act is a good thing but some aspects of it are absolutely necessary. Do you not agree? The trouble is being able to control the abuse of power. Gee, that should be to hard to control the governments abuse of power huh?
You could reverse those and make the opposite case. They simply represent different modes of naming. "Terrorist charity" is a loaded and judgemental term of the kind applied to organisations with agendas incommensurate with the status quo. It's not beyond our governments to use that kind of loaded language to demonise such people as "terrorists" or "terrorist supporters" when there is no evidence of wrongdoing. It is a necessary part of freedom that groups with alternative agendas are freely allowed to express their opinions. Without that there would be tyranny. What you call things is important; it changes the complexion of that which you name. You might state that you are performing the necessary act of "preventing terrorist charities from meeting in secret" when you are actually in many cases removing the right to freedom of assembly of innocent people. And thereby undermining the very notion of freedom itself.
Sherman Austin seems to be the wrong poster child in taking a stand against the Patriot Act. He was a looser from the get go.. We discussed this almost 2 years ago on here. Did he do something wrong? Yes, he did. Did it take the Patriot Act? Not sure if it was used or needed. Read the Search Warrent. Did the Patriot Act take away his freedoms? Hell no. His defacing of web sites, getting arrested at demonstrations, keeping himself in trouble even after the Feds raided his home was enough. A law that was updated in 1999 (not the Patriot Act), is what took away his freedom. Oh yah, his pleading guilty to it also had something to do with it.
PS. If you dont like the law, have it changed... Its been done in the past. http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/842.html
How can they not have probable cause but consider them known sleepers and terror act fund raisers? The fact of the matter is, they AREN'T known, and the FBI wants to be able to monitor whoever they want for no reason...or for the wrong reasons. Seems like the government gets more freedom while the citizens lose it.
The patriot act is far to general to be useful as a "tool to fight terrorism". The act has been used to justify the investigation of medical records of women who have had abortions-in what way is that at all related to 'terrorism'? The act has been used to justify the investigations of library records, and it is ILLEGAL for the librarian to tell you about it. The act has been used to justify random unannounced searches of homes and businesses WITHOUT WARRANTS or PROBABLE CAUSE....... You cannot tell me that the patriot act is a 'necessary' tool to fight 'terrorism'......it is impossible to wage war against an act-what actually constitutes 'terrorism'? Am I guilty of this so called 'terrorism' because I dont support the patriot act and all the other things our crooked government has to control us?
Exactly...The Patriot Act is nothing more than a doctrine saying that it's ok for the govt. to dry anally rape the bill of rights and anyone that shows free thought.
