So I recieved a forwarded email this morning explaning that if the Supreme Court supports Congress that it will be the end of NPR and PBS. Apparently, our government dosen't think that these programs are worth the funding. The e-mail was asking to sign a petition and forward it on, in hopes that the list of names would make it to the the Vice President and President. I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about this or has any more information to offer besides an e-mail. I listen to NPR quite often and I would be really sad if it was cancelled.
That would be tragic, but I wouldn't be surprised as the government is currently kicking impoverished senior citizens out of their medicare/medicaid and other benefits...... Luckily there are many intelligent wealthy people and foundations out there who give generously to to these two organizations.
A lot of people do fund NPR and PBS, but gov't subsidies are a HUGE part of that budget. Considering the Fascism going on now, I doubt those stations will be around much longer, which BLOWS!!! I listen to WAMC in Albany, and there seems to be no other readily available forum for intelligent discussion...except here of course
thanks for the extra info crystalstar. i hope that this petition works. i don't know where i would be without npr in the morning on my commute to work. and to think of all the little kiddos that would miss out on sesame street...tear.
I already signed a petition calling for Kenneth Tomlinson's (CPB Chairman) resignation. Unfortunately, in an attempt to destroy public media in America, the GOP and partisan (neo-con) board members at CPB have taken one of the first great leaps in the direction of creating a completely news-less society. Just great...
*fuming* You know why they're really doing this, don't you? PBS and NPR are forms of education. The government doesn't want that because educating us can be dangerous to them. They want us to be unaware. It's better for them to force feed us garbage, to dumb us down. PBS and NPR makes people think. They don't want us to think. The dumber the populace, the more legislation they pass, the bigger the government. Where can I find a petition to sign? Is there a particular site, and if so, will a signature be considered legit if it's via the internet?
hippychickmommy - I can send you the e-mail that I recieved if you like. Once the petition reaches certain numbers, it asks the the forward gets sent someone that is compiling the names. pm me if you want it.
Well, the petition that I signed asking for Tomlinson's resignation can be found here. I think that this particular petition would be considered legitimate because when you sign, (unlike other internet petitions) you are forced to enter your personal information (telephone number, address, etc.). A good source for information on PBS, NPR, and the Corporation for Public Broadcating is Timothy Karr's MediaCitizen blog.
i signed the petition, it had over half a million signatures when i did... i doubt it'll do anything, though. once this administration has its mind set on something, they wont change for anyone.
petitions are meaningless except under a very narrow set of circumstances and bush has no third term to run for......
Don't plan on things changing once Bush walks out the door. If anything, things will get worse. For some reason, a lot of people think there will be some kind of magical 180 in 2008.
