There are many Goddess' who have something to do with earth either in the creation or protection. here are a few of them:

Greek goddess Demeter. she is the goddess of harvest and the fertile earth and motherhood.

Greek Goddess Gaia. The mother earth

Greek god pan was god of wild places and shepards

Greek goddess Persephone goddess of harvest fertility and spring

Roman goddess' Ceres and Diana goddess' of harvest and fertility

Hindu Goddess Kali goddess of earth nature distruction creation and renewal

the Egyptions had more gods of earth then goddess' these where Amun, Geb, Ptah. although the goddess Bastet or Bast was goddess protector of animals childbirth and healing as well as other things

celtic goddess Cerridwen goddess of the moon harvest and insiration
goddess Morrigan goddess or war fertility and vegertation

from the norse tradition goddess Freyja was goddess of love and fertility

As you can see there are loads of goddesses accociated with the earth, it's difficult to know who you mean unless you know from which pantheon she belong or which culture but i hope this helped.

Do you mean that as you typed it, like a generic, unnamed The Goddess? If so, that seems to be becoming one of Wicca and/or Goddess Spirituality's "foundation myths." People like Marija Gimbutas and Starhawk have kind of made this theory popular, and while they make great cases for it, it's still full of holes... The theory usually goes something like: before the evil patriarchy took over, worship of The Goddess took place throughout the world, and there were no wars or abuse of women. Then certain cultures began to worship male sun/warrior gods and started conquering other tribes for land, etc, and coincidently, the oppression of women started and thus was born Evil Patriarchy, and here we are today!

Lol, last summer I wrote a paper for my World Mythology course linking Marija Gimbutas's theories, this "matriarchal" Great Mother utopian time, to make a case that war, worship of primarily male deities and meat consumption were all somehow related, lol! She loved it and I got an "A++"!! Total bunk, but she dug the thought process I guess, lol.

The main basis behind Wicca, mainly, is worshiping the Goddess, even though Wicca recognizes both a God and Goddess, there's more of an emphasis on the Goddess. So, the answer is yes.

While I absolutely love that movie, it is like, not even any kind of historically accurate, as it shouldn't be, it's Fantasy. Like I said in my other post, they refer to some generic The Goddess, which didn't happen in actual history.

And there is the goddess Tara [IMG]:

    Tara, Goddess
    of Peace and Protection

Goddess Tara is probably the oldest goddess who is still worshipped extensively in modern times. Tara originated as a Hindu goddess, the Mother Creator, representing the eternal life force that fuels all life.

There are many embodiments of Tara, but the best known are the White Tara and the Green Tara.
The peaceful, compassionate White Tara gently protects and brings long life and peace. The more dynamic goddess, Green Tara is the "Mother Earth", and a fierce goddess who overcomes obstacles, and saves us from physical and spiritual danger.

In Buddhist tradition, Tara is actually much greater than a goddess -- she is a female Buddha, an enlightened one was has attained the highest wisdom, capability and compassion. . . one who can take human form and who remains in oneness with the every living thing.
