I haven't seen this movie, but I have seen the synchronization with Pink Floyd's "Echoes" and have wanted to see it since Does anyone know if it is any good?
Comedy Central?? 2001 is a good movie. The special effects are certainly dated, but the movie is more about the story line than the special effects. There are also some reference to the US/ Soviet conflict that are outdated. Good movie.
It's verygood. But be prepared to get philosophical. There's not a lot of slam-bang action for the average attention span, and it gets downright trippy at the end, but if you catch hold of the theme, you won't be disappointed. I'm sorta slow; I had to see it 3 times AND read the book before I understood the meaning. :&
The book is far better than the movie! I read it twice, and its sequels. The film has a total of 45 minutes of dialogue. The ending is like a drug trip.
the book is void of all the meaning, symbolism, ambiguity, and masterful cinematography that made the movie a classic
yeah, kinda bored me too. i mean, i fell asleep trying to watch it 3 times before i made it to the end...and i still didn't really understand. i did enjoy, but i didn't get it. If you could convey the meaning in 30 words or less, what would you say it is?
Yah, as much as I love it, I gotta admit it's put me to sleep once or twice. But so does a good book. Anyway, this is by no means "the only" interpretation of the film, but here we go... The film is about the evolution of humankind. Actually, it's about humankind's use of tools in the evolutionary process. Part 1: The first tool is a bone used as a weapon for survival, defence and hunting. You can see how it makes humans the dominant species, but it also leads to savagery and brutality. Part 2: The second tool is the spaceship (note how it's made to look like a bone) used as a vehicle for exploration. Again, it takes them further, but things go haywire, and this tool almost destroys the entire mission. Part 3: The astronaut discovers the "stargate" and eventually leaves his spaceship. This is the last phase of evolution where humankind learns to give up the use of tools, and instead evolve through the mind. Yeah, acid trip stuff. Anyway, I think it's one of the most profound philosophical ideas I've ever seen in a movie. Kubrick was a fricken poet. Oops, I went a bit over 30 words. :& Hope this helped!
The flash movie below will fill in the missing blanks you may have with the meaning of the film. http://www.kubrick2001.com/
I'd recommend it to anyone who likes The Matrix although the pace of it is much slower. Still, it's one of those movies that really gives your brain a workout.
