I brush my teeth in the morning and at night, but sometimes during the day lately, I'm noticing that my breath isn't very nice... are there any foods or a diet that I could follow that would eliminate this? I carry gum around with me all the time ... I just figure there must be something in my diet that's making this happen..and it's only been happening maybe the last few months or so... though I don't think anything in my diet has really changed drastically.
I have read that tea has enzymes in it that help control bad breath, and i drink loads of tea anyway and do notice that if i get it with a meal, it does help control my breath more than if i just have water. So maybe if you drink more tea it can help control it. Make sure when you brush your teeth you are brushing your tongue well, because the tongue is where most bad breath originates, especialy the back of it where build up can happen. I have also read that there are some tonsil and sinus problems that can create bad breath that doesnt go away. I am posting a link that talks about those things and also causes and treatments of bad breath, there are links at the top with different titles that might interest you. If it doesnt work, just type in bad breath at google, you can get loads of info. http://www.dentist.net/badbreath.asp
I always found that gum would make my breath much WORSE after the minty-fresh taste wore off. Invest a small fee (about $5) into a tongue-scraper and use it every time before you brush your teeth. It's fun and gross seeing all the plaque that comes off your tongue. This alone will help, but I also recommend drinking lots of water, upping your fresh fruit and veggie intake, and staying away from mucus-forming dairy products. On another note, I've found that certain toothpastes (colgate, crest, etc.) had sweeteners that would make my breath smell nasty just a little while after brushing. My breath improved when I switched to more natural toothpastes. Tom's of Maine and Kiss My Face make good toothpastes, but the absolute BEST I've found is "Powersmile" by J/A/S/O/N. It's strong and minty and my mouth tastes/smells/is cleaner when I use it.
I use an tongue scraper in the morning before brushing and somtimes in the afternoon. Tongue scrapers remove the stuff from your tongue that contributes to bad breath. I use ACT Flouride rinse for my mouthwash which has no alcohol. Also, I read that it's good to sip some water throughtout the day to keep your mouth moist, because a dry mouth can cause bad breath. So stop by a water fountain from time to time and use an non-alcohol mouthwash like ACT. Alcohol is drying to the mouth.
Myths about Halitosis These are the most common myths: Halitosis comes from the stomach. Only in extremely rare cases does this occur. Halitosis comes from the lungs. Only rarely does this occur and can be a manifestation of a serious disease. Halitosis is a hereditary problem. This is absolutely not true. Mouth washes and breath mints can help a breath problem. This is not true. They only mask the problem for a few short minutes at best. Alcohol based mouthwashes in fact will worsen the problem because they dry out the mouth thus increasing the volatilization of breath odors. Internal breath fresheners can help my problem. These do absolutely nothing for a chronic halitosis condition. Brushing my teeth more will help eliminate my breath condition. This is also not true. Excessive brushing can dry one’s mouth, thus increasing the halitosis problem. Excessive brushing can also damage the teeth and gums over time. It is very difficult to remove the specific odor causing bacteria with brushing and flossing alone, and most patients we see at our center tend to have very good oral hygiene. Halitosis is caused by foods. Foods such as onions, garlic, or cauliflower can induce certain odors but these are only transitory, and can be easily eliminated by avoiding that particular food. The odors they produce also are not of the “sulfur” type commonly seen in true halitosis conditions, and generally are not as offensive. There is no treatment for halitosis. There is a highly effective treatment for this problem, at the Center For Breath Treatment. http://www.breathcure.com/myths.html
Most Bad Breath problems are Organic and stems from a dirty colon/poor digestion. I have noticed that diabetics have a problem controling bad breath, and Piorea is a factor. An infection in the lungs or sinus, will cause a foul odor and should be treated right away. When a client comes to me with bad breath, I suggest Liquid Cholorophyll. Liquid Cholorophyll cleans out the liver and colon and aids in digestion. It is a deodorizer and will elimate bad breath and stinky feet, in fact if used with fiber and leafy greens over a peroid of a couple of months liquid cholorophyll will deodorize the entire body, including underarm odor. You can also use it on pets to keep their breath and body odor free. Just a few drops in thier water dish daily will do the trick. For humans 1 Tablespoon in an 8oz glass of pure water twice a day is recommended. It is almost tasteless but has a very green appearence. I put a few drops of Peppermint Oil in my bottle and sip on a couple of glasses daily. I love it. It gives me energy and odor free body and oxigenate the intire system. There is only 1 side affect, it depleats the Zinc in the body and one should suppliment with a zinc product. Cholorophyll is used in healing several different Organic situations, too many to post. Try a Google on Cholorophyll and see what pops up. Lots of good stuff. I hope this helps SH
Well actually bad breath experts or dentist say that most bad breath originates from the tongue. Bad breath from the digestive system is rare and is usually from people with specific medical conditions such as the ones you mentioned above. So unless a person has a specific medical condition related to their digestive system they probably won't have bad breath comming from there.
but it is worth checking out! Shameless, I use wheat grass in a similar situation. Two shots per day. and if nothing in someone's habits has changed, start looking down the line: teeth? cavities or gum disease casue/harbour odor bacteria lungs, probably not, but infections if the lungs/sinuses make you stink...in that sick way. just putrid and no relief with a professional cleaning? check the other end of the system. Eliminating in a long "tube " that floats? at least twice a day? check that one off the list. only once or poopoing marbles? fiber fiber fiber! water water water!
Another thing as far as brushing your teeth. I once read that the "stuff" on your teeth that needs brushing off in the morning is also in your mouth as a whole. So to get your mouth extra clean, you should also gently brush your gums, sides of your mouth and the roof area of your mouth.
I was struggling with bad breath and I tried a product called The Mouth Doctor...it works great... I am so thankful I found it... Good luck and i hope it works for you. http://www.oramd.com?kbid=1430
I had a similar problem for a while and simply flossing and rinsing between each tooth twice a day stopped it. Tamsyn
