From my experience, ants seem to like to eat my sunflower seedlings, but I have read in websites that they may be instrumental to peonies opening, so I would think it depends on what you grow. They are not those nasty red fire ants, are they? If so, kill them all, before they bite YOU.

Well, I don't know. Sorry. Maybe you could use those little traps, but if you have hills, I don't know how effective they will really be. But, if anybody else has a way to control them without chemicals, I'm interested, too. [IMG]

Try filling up a spray bottle with red pepper powder and watter(way strong) and spay them.viniger works too. or you can try to relocate them, dig underneath the nest and put it someware far from the garden.good luck

Fire ants are the biggest problem around here, to bad the armadillos keep on getting hit on the roads, they just got up here, they migrated from like south america up here or something, i had never seen them till recent years, and I petted one, it feels like a leather couch... I heard they eat ants. But as for fire ants do whatever you can to kill them, because they spread fast, heres one technique I like to do, and its fun to watch, get a shovel and disturb one fire ant bed, then go to another, and dig it up and put it on top of the other fire ant bed, and they will automatically start fighting each other and fight to the death with glory, and kill most of each other out.

    Sorry for the late post...

I pour water on them. It's pretty much as simple as that. Next time you are watering your garden, just spray them good with the hose. They'll normally let their lair get messed up only once or twice, then they will move.
I might be mistake, but I think ants are actually good for the garden. They airate the soil and keep other things out like slugs and catapilars.

There are no fire ants where we live, but this works for all the other kids of ants we have. Mix up one part Borax and about 2 to 4 parts sugar. (Depending on what you are putting it on, as too much Borax will kill plants in high measures.) I sometimes put some cocoa poweder in there, too. Sprinkle in around the ant hill. The Borax will kill them when they try to eat the sugar, and they will bring the shit back to their nest.

There is a really good product called "Terro" for ants. It is NOT extrememly poisonous, but I don't think you can use it outside, as animals may get into it. It is good for in the house.

When I lived in the south and had a (YUK) roach problem, that Borax thing worked the best of anything I tried. Eradicated them all. And you can put it under the frig and other areas where your pets can't get to it.

You can find borax usually in the laundry aisle. I have these nasty big, well huge, fire ants and they are eating my sunflower seedlings! I just saw them this weekend. They are so fucking BIG!! Like, almost an inch long. I want them dead dead dead.
