Hey, we have a campground in WV that would make a good stopover place on the way to the Gathering. $10.00 per day per tent. That's reduced rates for Rainbows. It's real private, and there is a good swimming hole. We'll be here until the 30th of June, then we're heading for the National ourselves. Check it out. http://erthma420.wirefire.com/ranch.html

Are you the one who posted on the community calendar that there's an "Always Free Music & Peace Gathering" in Arnoldsburg, WV the 18th thru the 24th of July? I didn't see your link there. -Par
Hey, yea, I know, I know, but this place is trying to be a working campground, and the only way this farm has to make any money at the moment. Usual rates are $15.00 a day. It costs $ to keep it all mowed and maintained. I don't spend 6 days at a time mowing in the hot sun (gas prices included) just for my sanity!!! There's 115 acres to take care of, and it costs $. The bucks need to come from somewhere. Not everything in life is free, no matter who you are. So we do all the work and spend all the money, and ya'll want to get something for nothing... THAT ain't Rainbow either. Anyhow, I'd think hippyhillbilly could relate just a little bit, what with his Feel Free farm project and all. We offer what we can. We get NO help at all. It's all on me and my significant other. We don't have a wealthy benefactor to give us all the bucks we need to keep things running. Yea, we are the ones having the AlwaysFree Jamfest. And it IS free. All week. There's at least 10 bands lined up for that weekend. So if ya wanna camp here for free, come for the Jamfest. It'll be a great time. THAT'S our "Rainbow" contribution to the world. Who else do you know who does something like that? It still requires contributions of food and energy. Real life, and particularly Rainbow, is all about participation, not sucking freebees off others "more fortunate". Bottom line is, we give all we can. We give more than most. We give any more, we starve. That's how the world works.
Just an afterthought... None of you folks know us. So how do you know that if we made $100.00 off of campers, that we wouldn't show up at the gathering with $150.00 worth of food? Or more. That would be something we would do. How can you pretend to know how much time and energy we would put into helping at the gathering? How can you possibly know where your karma would take you if you did happen to camp here? Why be so narrow minded? We nearly always give more than we recieve. But people with narrow minds recieve nothing. This is the exact attitude that gives hippies a bad name. All the bad attitudes put me in mind of a little Rainbow guy we took in for a couple days last month. He was headed for the regional in Va. He was extremely annoying, loud, obnoxious, his dog kept trying to eat my cats. He bummed a million cigarettes, helped himself to the refrigerator, the stash, anything he wanted. Never lifted a finger to help. We spent a great deal of time helping him with directions, and giving him a ride where he needed to go. Total Drainbow. But we did it anyhow, because that's our way. As he was leaving he bragged to me about having $300.00 stuffed in his sock!!!! Oh well, life is an adventure. I run my life with the main focus being to make the world a better place, and helping folks is a big part of that. But people with bad attitudes, people who are judgemental and always think they know everything, people who only have bad things to say, they don't gain, nearly as much as folks who have open hearts and open minds. If yer travelling to the gathering, and feel the need to camp for nuthin' along the way, stop and talk to us, be a good human being, help out, be responsible for yourself. If you're destitute, then we might help if it looks like the right thing to do. But sneaking up into the woods to camp for freebees, well, ya might get shot as a tresspasser here, so I'd recommend if you're that way, you'd be better off camping in the woods along the interstate.
I agree with what you have to say, earthmother. Sadly, I gave up trying to help, as I was drained by drainbows. Folks that take and take, and offer nothing in return. Folks who act like you're being unreasonable if you ask for something in trade. I stopped trying to help because of people like that. Then I became the 'bad person', because I started lookin' out for number one again. It's too bad. I'm still not sure I want to go to another gathering.
But it's folks with your attitude that the Rainbow needs the most. We need to be the teachers. This is why Rainbow seems to be going downhill. Alot of folks get burned and burned out from all the "helping", and say they're done with Rainbow, but these ARE the true Rainbow folks, so ya can't just leave it behind. I believe in the "help them help themselves" concept. If they won't, just move on. It's THEIR karma, and no one escapes living their karma. Even if they don't believe in karma... We don't need to lose any more good souls, for the sake of the survival of the Rainbow...
yes we have the feel free farm project,, an no i dont understand,, if i wanna make money i do it off babylon,, if i wanna help phamily i open my doors.. im glad your blessed with 110 acres,, an i full well know what it takes to keep shit goin,, thus the feel free farm was born.. As far as drainbows,, yeah there everywhere,, but thats no reason to lump all phamily into that catagory.. man weve had so many kynd folk come thru here eager to help its far outweighed the "drainbows".. maybee its cause ya are tryin to be a "for profit" "campground",,that ya are atracting the dreggs,,, i dunno.. An i stand by my statement,, as close as you are,, an bein what time it is,, it should be free to phamily..ya should feed them as well.. As far as kick down to the hat,, i never said ya wouldnt,, just gave two logical ways to go.. strange to me that your music fest is free,, ya inviting the whole clan(be careful what ya wish for,,front gate may just come party) but here when holdin camps gettin hasseled by leos, an phamily needs ya most, ya charging... dont make no sence to me..but thats just me.. luv n lite
That's WHY we charge. To eliminate the dreggs. Otherwise, it would be a hobo hoedown free for all here all the time. Actually, it's taken years to get things down to managable... This IS Babylon, just a watered down, rainbowized version, in the middle of a spiritual desert. Don't mean to burst your Utopian bubble... If you have the where-with-all to feed and house god only knows how many folks at one time for who knows how long, then by all means, do. We'll deal with the cleanup crew. No matter who they are, they'll have to be responsible for themselves. We've been doing the Jamfest for 11 years, and we have things pretty well figured out by now. We supply the space, the stage & electric, and some food, everything else supplied by the guests. We also have rather alot of family here who help things run smoothly during... So we ain't too worried. Runnin' this thing in as much a Rainbow way as possible has been the only thing that's made it do-able, due to the LARGE number of alcoholics in this neck of the woods... Tried the open door policy on a dairy farm in NY a long time ago. Looking for people who wanted the farm experience, learn, etc. in exchange for room and board. It was a so-so experience. Mostly it didn't really help the cause. Folks get too caught up in what they THINK it ought to be about, and when the work got too much, they bailed. Not into folks wierd trips. It's too draining. Glad you have the patience. At any rate, I don't know of ANYONE who can afford to just give away their livelyhood for a week or more at a time. We already do that at Jamfest, and we'll be at Rainbow for a week too, workin' hard, and I really think that is about the limit of what we can do and still survive. Don't really think anyone has the right to lay a judgement on us for that. Personally, I wouldn't ask anything of anybody that I wouldn't be willing to do myself. I bet alot of other folks wouldn't have a problem with this arrangement either. If they do, then they've come to the wrong place anyhow...
I've done things where I sleep and work on a farm in exchange for room and board. They ended up paying me at the end because they thought they should, but they didn't need to. I'm not trying to freeload. But $10/night for the right to camp offends me. I thought that part of the point of Rainbow was that the land should be free for everyone.
Land should be free for everyone, but unfortunately, we have to pay taxes to keep it. Or the government will come and take it away from us, sell it to condo developers, and you're outta luck. I'm suprised that you are offended by the notion of paying to use what someone else worked to achieve. Would you also, then, be offended if someone giving you a ride asked you to give them a little gas money? I don't see the difference. You don't own the land, or car, or whatever, so you don't have recurring costs towards it. So the folks that do should just let you use their things free of all costs? That sounds very rainbow like. Gosh. If that is rainbow, then I don't need to go to the gathering. I can just give away my time and money to folks in my very own town. Feh. Forget the gathering.
depends on what fringe of babylon that ya forced to hang on to.. neither thought proccess is wrong in my opinion,, thats why i simply agreed to disagree... The outer edges, wich most have no choice to kling to are ragged and take on many diffrent levels of ,,shall we say,, "rainbow"... his opinion is just as valid as yours mine and earthmothers.. an if ya wanna give your time an money to people in your very own town,,, then blessins im sure you an many others are doin what ya feel is right an just,, as it is.. I as well as david howeer seem to have a diffrent mindset,, speccially when it comes this time of year.. do we expect ya to understand?? not really,, would we like you to accept that thats the way we feel? very much so.. luv~N~lite see ya in 18 days...
early in the thread you mentioned that no one helps, that you and your spouse do all the work. Hey, land taxes and all that, I hear ya, drainbows, etc, sure, I see your point, but...what i see missing is an offer to waive that fee in exchange for pitching in. You could use the help, right. Lots of us broke hippies out there, could have that place lookin sharp in no time. And just to clarify, it's not you gonna do the shootin of trespassers, is it? That's not very rainbow...
and, i have been considering this...the last few gatherings ive been to i cant stay out of the kitchen. seems there's always something to do, and the harder you work, the more people expect you to take care of them.it got to the point where i figured, maybe this is my fate, maybe these kids will suck me dry, but it feelsright to be doing it...whether they even say thank you, whether they fetch water or wood or just hang about begging for pot, even if im stepped on, i am doingmy service to the family, and here's the thing, maybe that is what it means to be rainbow, to give until it hurts, to give until you cant stand it anymore, without thought to reward, cause if there are 100 drainbows taking advantage, there are a couple genuines that deserve, appreciate and make the whole thing worth it. thats the way it is right now. we are called upon to give andin this climate it's a thankless gig, very draining, but it is what needs to be done. I believe in karma. and when you run out of food and whatnot to give away, the drainbows leave. but i have no desire to own land and generally would rather give away everything i own rather than maintain it or carry it around, so i don't know how ti translate for other people....
well said raven23.......giving is part of spiritual evolution, and spiritual evolution is the "reason we are here". Even if you have "nothing" to give....you have "something" to give, your soul to your fellow man.
