    :D i feel special now
you really do have to look into what they really think of their lives. many of them love it; they're happy as can be. like i said, we could really learn a lot from them over here in our spoiled little world. instead of focusing on what they don't have (which we do all the time), they appreciate everything they do have, even if we don't think that it's up to our standards.

happy?..i highly doubt having to work in a place were conditions are horrible there are looong hours and your payed hardly anything is pleasing to anyone..yes it is true that if they didnt have these jobs that they would be on the streets..but we as amercians should open our eyes to what these companies are doing and make a difference..have them improve there conditions, highten the wages, and help them produce independent unions so they can help themselves..which they cant do cause the governments control the unions...sure ppl in other places arnt as materalistic as we are and they are happier with fewer things..but noone should be treated like animals ...were being the wrong ones here...because we all demand sooo much...most of the worlds population suffers..and then we say that these ppl are happy...hell i wouldnt be happy if i was working in those conditons and still not being paid enough to buy food......we saying they are happy is just justification to buy all the cloths we want..its pathetic...

I understand your point too. I also sympathize with your concerns.:)

This is a good idea. I find that a lot of us have good ideas on the surface. But specifically HOW do we do the above. The corporations are only huge because of the vast costomer populous. A few hippies not buying thier stuff will not even come close to counteracting the huge numbers of costomers. So how should we go about having "them improve there conditions, highten the wages, and help them produce independent unions so they can help themselves". This is easy for you to say but a lot harder to accomplish. This forum is full of great general suggestions for "end result" solutions but many times we fail to actually provide specifics about the steps that we, as a community, should take. I am not bashing you, at all, for your input, I'm just saying that a lot of very good suggestions are a lot easer said than done.

A lot of original "hippie" clothing was done out of necessity, at least at first. I look pretty hippie-ish to people, not because I necessarily -try- to, but because homemade and self-modified clothes are cheap and last longer.

I think perhaps there might be an issue if you choose clothing in accordance with what'll make you popular rather than what you like, but if you're choosing based on comfort and personal preference there is no problem.

i never said that i advocated work places treating these people like dogs. that's not what i meant at all. all the things that you listed to accomplish over there would be great, but like groovy said, how are we suppoed to do that? granted, if all of our governments would get their heads out of their asses and actually use money wisely, this wouldn't be as hard of a problem to solve as it is right now, but sadily, that's not going to be happening any time soon.
i don't buy the clothes in those stores, so i'm not justifying anything.
i'm just speaking from what i've heard from people who've actually been IN those countries for a while and seen what life is like, and like i said, many are very happy.

Yuck, yuck, yuck. A lot this this makes me sick.

First of all, if you even have to question what you wear or what you look like, I woudn't consider you a hippie. I'd consider you lost and trying to fit in somewhere.

Take 5 minutes and stand completely naked in front of the mirror. (no- this isn't sexual. Sorry fellas.) Stand there and look yourself in the eye and think about what you really believe in. Think about your morals. Think about what makes you happy. Now try and think about- if those ideas had a color, what would it be? If it had a texture, how would it feel?

It's ok to express your ideals by what you wear. It's not good to try and make it look liek someone else's ideals, though. See what I'm saying?

Now, anyone would take one look at me and think I walked out of a time machine. TO those of you who say the hippies who dress hippies are posers... you are right about some but not all. I wear what I do because it looks like my mood. It makes me feel great. It's comfy. My clothes are mostly handmade except for gifts. It's just ME! I'm not a poser at all. I just like to wear what makes me feel good.

I suggest all of you to do the same. No matter what you wear as long as you feel good in it, it's no one else's business to judge. :)

I tend to wear whatever is comfortable at the moment and is appropiate with the mood I'm in... Although I'd say I tend to enjoy dresses and skirts a lot.

    yea it got me too.

to me it doesnt matter what you wear. its the ideals that proceed you. Wether it be in a certain "group" or "style" or not. As long as YOU express YOUR own ideals in whichever way you want YOU are your own person. You shouldnt care how people classify you, or what they think of you. And I believe you need to know who your real friends are. (not the ones that put you in a certain group by judging your way of expressing yourself.)

i hate it when people try to say that they are a certain way just because of the way that they dress... *(ie punks goths etc) i think that the only way to be in a certain group is first of all to want to be there and second truly believe in the ideas of the group

that is completely, totally, and utterly true... if you dont like your friends, get new ones, y'know? fuck hangin with people cause of how they present, in physical terms, themselves... generally a person has friends whose ideals are similar to that of their own... anyway, yeah... you can be a 'hippy' and not dress like one...
