Bah, I don't even fucking bother anymore...it's a sham; the anti-virus companies sell you a product to protect you from a problem they created. As long as your CC# or SS# aren't stolen it doesn't really even matter anymore...

Viruses aren't even the main threat these days. I'm wondering whether or not to renew my norton subscription or not. It's spyware that is the biggest pain these days. Fortunately Microsoft's own antispyware thingy seems to be the best one out there, and it's free as well. I managed to get some crack for some pay-software out there when I was infected with the lop programme and none of them could get rid of it, but the microsoft one did. Well I can't be sure if it actually did properly because by the time I'd got it I'd been fumbling around in the registry according to some instructions I'd found online which got rid of all the symptoms at least. Microsoft's antispyware programme did find a few leftovers though.

Adaware's good but it didn't fix Lop for me. Mind you it was no worse than any of the ones I cracked that you'd normally have to pay for.

AVG's free antivirus works just as well as norton for me. norton always seems to just run so big in the back ground slowing my shit down to much. Now AVG runs fine catches most shit and updates itself regularly when connected to the net

I'd reccommend a combination of AVG, Adaware, and Spybot

    those three keep my clean.
/and they make my hair silky and manageable.

A responsible computer user doesn't need an antivirus.

"Kind ponders this question and hopes the poster will elaborate, as kind knows his roadrunner connected computer becomes a hot target if just left as a node out there in cyberspace" (kind thEn pulls his head back behind his fire wall, pulls his AVG down on his head, slides his arms into his Adaware jacket and goes back to sUrf the net.)

You are confusing having a firewall and an antivirus. A firewall is very important. In fact, I am building a hardware firewall out of an old computer right now.

An antivirus, now, that's a different story. The people who need an antivirus are the ones who may think that opening the XXX_Pr0n.JPG.EXE file in their inbox is a good idea. I've been using computers since '92, and was constantly connected since '99. I've never had a virus, or an antivirus program.

Keep your computer basically locked against most spyware, install SpywareBlaster. I use that combined with Spybot Search&Destroy, Adaware and for A/V-Firewall I use Bitware Defender. Bitware is far less expensive than Norton and has features you have to pay extra to get with both Norton and McAfee (i.e. Firewall (with registry monitor feature), Anti-Spam, and Auto-update).

All told they work a charm for me.

Anyone who actually pays for an antivirus is a silly person indeed. There are plenty of great freeware antivirus applications our right now that are just as good if not better than many of the commercial programs. AVG is a great example. Norton and McAfee are crap. They consume too much system resources, and their detection rates suck. The only reason so many people use them is because they are mainstream, but that doesn't make them better.

Had the free version of AVG, but if you examine it youll find that the free version only detects but will not clean any viruses it finds. That's why I got rid of it. Nice scam they got going, make you pay to get the cleaning feature.

Bitware only cost me €25 ($30) for much more than just an A/V program.
