One Man's Wilderness based on the journals of Dick Pronneke. This man, who was in his early 50s at the time of starting, went into the Alaskan Wilderness and built a cabin with his own hands. At the cost of $40.00. He lived there for more than 30 years, when in his 90s the winters, and the need to climb up his ladder to get to his food (placed in a shed on stilts to keep bears out of it) got too much for him.

The book is the story of his first two years. The first year is just the summer and fall. Then he moves in full time. He talks about his food, (mostly things that hunters (who Dick considers wasteful people) left behind) and sourdough pancakes and biscuits and veggies from his garden and beans, to details on how he built his cabin and how he lived off the land.

Wonderful book. Even if you won't decide to live up there yourself. There is also a video about his first two years, but I really like th book.

He's so cool! And not only does he not even care, he doesn't even know it. I am afraid my dh will run away to Alaska when he reads this. I almost wanted to.

Read the book, Dill. It is wonderful. You can feel the peace of the Mountains and the Lake while reading it.

Yes, there was a special on PBS during their week that they ask for donations. That is how I found out about it. I went to the Bookstore and ordered it immediately.

Walden by Thoreau is much similar, also older (1800s?). I'm glad that more than one person has the sense to write about their experiences living in the wilderness. I want to do it eventually too! *looks for book on library webpage* Thanks!
