to any people who may be straight edge out there: What is your reasoning behind being against drugs and casual sex? I am just curious, I am not trying to challenge you.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with being "straight-edge", it's just those who make it an effort to crusade against the drug culture that piss me off; personally I see at as an effort by kids raised under strict Christian conditioning that feel the need to "differentiate" from the normal.

I am not a straight edge person at all , but I could see the reasoning behind not wanting anything to do with the drug scene.

Even as a person who loves certain drugs, the whole scene bugs me out sometimes.

Think about it, so many of these kids are so fake and lost. Their whole life revolves aorund hustling people. I'm not stupid enough to think that they're just trying to "spread the love" Not anymore. Most are out ot make a buck and will do anything they can to get it.

Aside from the shady drug dealers, there are the irresponsible drug users. I've seen so many kids rushed to the hospital. No one ever likes to see that shit and I don't blame some kids for not wanting to expose themselves to that. It doesn't even need to get that serious to be annoying. We've all seen our friends or strangers act like total freaks or assholes because they did too much. They shout and fight, or puke and try to hug you... man I could go on and on.

Like I said, it hasn't been enough to scare me away, but it does make me think twice about all the bullshit that comes with dealing with lots of drugs.

As for casual sex, there's enough threads in other forums about that subject.

I would never fault a person for being against casual sex and drugs, both things can certainly mess up a persons life.

I do have an objection to straight edge people being violent and beating up others for drinking or drugs. That is far worse than either of the two things they allegedly fight against.

It has been going on for a long time...I remember straight edge kids beating up a nazi who was being restrained by a bouncer at a show in the the 80's......kind of defeats the message.

Yeah thats what I dont like, the ones that try and shove their doctrine down your throat, or beat up and even murder people who dont live the straight edge. I think its stupid and I hate the whole "sxe" and their stupid music. But thats just my opinion and opinions are like assholes everybody has one.

we have a group of straight edge kids in our school. they're crazy about it too. one day at lunch me and my friends were sitting outside on the grass minding our own business when they started marching around our circle holding their hands out with the "X"'s on them. they started calling us "stoners" "drug addicts" "a waste on society" anything you could think of. i think they got more mad when we just got up, moved, and started playing guitar again haha .

I've always found the whole straight-edge thing to be barely distinguishable from outright fascism myself. It's an all-or-nothing ideology and as such is no better than someone who thinks all people *must* experiment with drugs to have any valid or genuine insights on the universe. NOTHING is so black and white as some people would like to make it out to be.

@blazednconfused, try not antagonize the kids and definitely don't let them get to you too much: in another 10 years they'll be swilling beers while watching porno alone in their dilapidated apartments, trust me.

(that being said, i just came from a Ratdog show last night where the was some idiotic behavior, esp. in the parking lot, that sorta makes me glad I don't have much direct contact with 'the scene' these days either. Meth'd out kids trying to sell 'shroom chocolates' that I'm 99% sure were bogus, a suburban kid knocking out his own tail-light while trying to back out of a parking space while on several hits of cid -- thankfully we talked him into leaving the car parked overnight once his stubborn ass realized that he really *wasn't* capable of driving...)

@eat_some.. I wouldn't generalize that these kids were raised under "strict Christian upbringing" or conditioning. I've known a lot of people who were straight-edged when they were younger (now, this is *my* generalization, but it really seems like it is very often a 'phase' that people grow out of..) , and a great deal of them were actually raised by liberal parents and/or hippy parents: protesting against things like drug use and casual sex is often their way of rebelling... hell, if my parents were stoned all the time I might feel the same way, who knows.

But i have to agree, the music does suck.

The really interesting thing about the christian doctrines on drugs is, that one of the most dangerous drugs in the world is used for christian rituals (yes, I mean the alcohol). And besides that: Jesus Christ lived in a region, where cannabis use was very common at that time, so it´s very much possible, that he got in contact with it. Didn´t you ever ask yourself, why the odor in a catholic church so closely resembles the odor of cannabis...? ;)

    One more thought:
I think, sometimes it´s better to let people continue misusing their drugs, than bringing them "the word" in order to make them become abstinent (look at the US-President!)...

funny this is, we dont even talk to them or even notice when theyre there. we mind our on business about it, they're the ones causing up roars about us doing drugs. and i dont let it get to me, i found it quite humerous that they had a little rally around our group

whats this you guys talk about ''x' on hands? is there actually a striaght edge cult in american teenagers?

anyway ive never known of any people that straight edge, if your not doin drug,s your gettin pissed, around here haha.

but i really dislike striaght edge mentality. the only time you know someone is abstaining for somethin genuinely, and not because they were told to or tricked into (caus theyre stupid and can be manipulated easily) or simply pushed into by community, is the way tey express it to you.

a user is less likely to be born again than an abuser, i recon

it might as well be a cult. they wear X's on their hands to show theyre straight edge. i asked them once what i should wear on my hand since i do drugs. haha, they said that it wouldnt matter because in 5 years all the marijuana i smoke will kill my braincells. how naive

yeah, sXe fight around here, and it sucks, they dont fight fair, they gang up on people, and they beat up girls ect... if they are against EVERYTHING (red meat included) then why aren't they against violence?!?!?! i mean i dont push my ideas on them why they gotta do it to me?

i think the lack of vices in their lives makes them adrenaline junkies, and they feel they HAVE to fight... i dunno, just an idea

and there is this "courage crew" around here which is like SUPER straight edge and they jump you to initiate you. then they go around trying to find drunkards outside bars that they can jump. scary shit...

An excellent point indeed! Seems just a wee-bit hypocritical of them eh? But just to be clear -- there *are* non-violent straight-edge people out there, at least there were when I was your age but i'm about 12 years older than you.. so, maybe things have taken a turn for the worse. These kids you're describing sound barely distinguishable from just straight-up thugs. *sigh*

The Gospel of THomas ( the gospel which many christians shun ) is very spiritual and sounds like jesus may have been using canabis oils. Its a very strong possibility.
