what kind of 'panels' do you use? sometimes i use varied fabrics, straight, slightly triangular panels. on the sides, i'll add a row of small patches. other skirts, i'll make about 5 big patches down, then put small slightly triangular solid panels between. i've made pure patchy skirts before, but they tend to be a bit boxy without the solid panels. i'm running out of patch laying ideas. i think for my next one i'll try triangular patches.
I usually use squares but that's because i'm lazy . I tend to pick out about 6 fabrics that go together then an "outcast"
I do the whole square thing too, also lazy ... I like mixing batik prints and cordouroy squares, I think they look funky together.
when i do pure patchy skirts, i sew however many patchy panels i want, then taper them (slight triangle) and sew them together. a little bit more work, but they fit so much better for me. that may not work for someone who wants the patches to line up perfectly. i like mine to be a little random.
hmm...i guess i do that too, the tapering thing. sometimes i'll start with one slightly triangular panel in the front, and add from there. i find, oddly (or not) enough, that the middle panel will be the longest, in the front and back, with the sides being a tiny bit shorter. this makes for a good a-line skirt, as it flares out...hemmings a bitch though, always, the worst part. i'd post pictures but i DON'T KNOW HOW and can't seem to find out either. anyone know how?
