http://www.nudeasthenews.com/obsessions/obs_phish.htm I found it to be snobby and offensive myself, but maybe I read to much into it? Just curious to see what y'all think about it!
I personally thought it was ridiculous.....everybody has opinions about music, that was just one.....I don't see any reason why the kid can't take in all the music at a live show that he does sitting at home..... I do....if not I take in more..... an argument like that can be made for every band...you could pick creed apart like that and compair there style to miles davis if you listen closely......
I am not a "phan" of Phish, and am not willing to subject myself to the poseurs who attend their shows. But, I give people credit who can see beyond the superficialities of the "scene" and still appreciate the music. Because let's face it, a large majority of Phish phans are nothing more than wannabe kids looking for a place to fit in. Or they're in it only for the drugs. I've never been to a Phish show before, but I imagine it isn't much different from a frat party, where everyone dresses alike and acts alike. It's pretty lame if you ask me. And I feel that way not only about Phish, but any band that attracts a "scene." I so much hate cliches, and many Phish phans fall into the most obvious cliches associated with music today. "Dude, where's my hemp necklace? Where'd I put my $150 Birkenstocks, mannn? Now I am going to have to pilfer more money off of my yuppie parents.... It's already bad enough I just spent $30 on an official Phish t-shirt, mannn..... I think Trey even wiped his ass on this one, dude. Dude, who broke my $200 handcrafted bong? Who ate my pork rinds, dude?? Where is my mega slurpie, man??" The entire scene is just laughable. I wouldn't go to a Phish show if you paid me.
No offense, because I am not a bitch ( nor I am trying to be ) but I requested replies for Phish fans.. and I do understand this reply from someone who isn't into Phish. I find it rhetorical for you to reply to a question/website response- since you are not a fan of that type of music. The idea of the article/website was a Phish fan who did not fit the mold of the typical stereotype, and I found the article snobby, pretentious, and highly supercilious ( due to the way it was written ) I am not saying one HAS to fit the stereotype, but why jeer at others who do? If you are not into Phish I don't really care, what would the world be like if everyone was into the same things.. etc etc. I don't see the need to insult me and other Phish fans... I am not rich, I come from humble upbringings, and I don't have 100 dollar birkenstocks, but 5 dollar sandals that I got at Old Navy. My parents are not rich, they are just middle class ( as are other Phish fans that I know ) I am sorry if this post or my previous one offended you...But to be on a hippy forum and call a collective amount of people all posers seems a little extreme to me, especially when you don't know me personally. I simply asked for the opinions of various Phish fans on an article, I didn't ask to be ridiculed by you " assumptions " which does not even match who I am at all.
I never referred to YOU as a poseur or made fun of YOU, but rather the collective scene. I am sorry you cannot tolerate other people's opinions, and I am sorry for responding to this. I must have read over the fact that only "Phish phans" are allowed to reply, since you're clearly intolerant of what people say who disagree with what you believe. But of course since you want the opinion of only "Phish phans," they will probably all say the same exact thing, which is what YOU want to hear. If you got flustered over such an article, there has to be a reason for it. Because if what the article said wasn't the truth, you probably wouldn't be as bothered over it as you obviously are.
Did I not say that I don't care who likes or dislikes Phish, and that the world IS a better place when other people have opinions that differ from mine?? I think they way you stated you opinion was offensive, not your specific opinion itself, like the yuppy parents, the bong comment etc... but that aside, I am not hear to start fights or anything. What type of music are you into? I do love Phish, but I am always open to other types of music. I'd like to call this back-and-worth thing a misunderstanding. I am sorry that I perceived "the scene" as each individual. I think Phish is really really talented, but I would like to know what you are into, who knows I could like it even more. I am sorry we started off onto a bad foot! *Lex*
This guy is a joke...no matter what you do these days your going to fit into a scene...and if you find that you don't, then you fit into the scene of those that don't fit scenes.....every band in history has a scene that goes with it except for maybe a garage band that doesn't know how to tune. The hasty generalization you made about every phish fan in existance sounds a lot like the rant of an ignorrant frat boy, thank god for people like you that can describe a scene of thousands with over 15 years of history in three short sentences.....you deserve a job writing for dateline or 60 minutes or something with your great writing and integrity...
the article may have been a bit snobish.....i dont understand when people say that they wont attend a concert because of all the others who are there for the "scene" and the "drugs" or whatever. I love Phish....I love alot of bands, and when I go to the concert I go for the music. I dont give a shit who else is there of why they are there or how they are dressed or what "scene" they fit into. We are all there for the music....and the few that arent, whatever, doesnt bother me or ruin my time at all....and who would I be to pick and choose who is there for what reason....who gives a shit!
Um, no... Not really. Describe them. What is that supposed to mean? The Sex Pistols have plenty of followers, dumbass. Did I say "every Phish fan in existance?" Dude, they've been around for like 20 years, dude. I bet they'd hire me, too. And I'd make a lot of money.
EXACTLY typical Alpha male - it is the reason for their break up, kind of the same deal as when Sting decided that the Police needed to end it.
I find this to be quite rediculaus since I myself, am a phish fan I went to the night1 spac show LAST NIGHT you seem to believe that every person who likes phish thinks in that type of mind state or something? sure there are some materialistic bastard yuppie fags running around but dont generalize "the scene" how unfair
Yes, I forgot that self-proclaimed hippies have little tolerance for people's opinions that differ from their own. It's part of the whole mentality and mindset.
Pressed_rat seems to have little tolerance for opinions other than his own. The funniest thing in your slew of half-assed arguments is that you criticize the scene while having never been to a concert. So basically you're criticizing and making wide sweeping generalizations about something you really have no idea about. i agree that every band with fans has some sort of scene attached to it.. even the scene of "those who dont fit scenes." Pretty much anyone i've ever met who claimed to not be part of soem sort of scene was actually just in denial. It's 'cool" to not be in a scene for a lot of people so those people who see it as cool to not be in scenes tend to congregate together, thus creating their own scene, although they deny it's existance. anyway, gain more experience, then try and spout off more intelligent garbage. I was at SPAC the last 2 nights (what a fucking show!) and RAT, you remind me of the boy who was talking about me to his girlfriend and a cashier, calling me a trustfund babie as I whipped out my check card to pay for a couple shirts and a visor for my boyfriend. I am a gal who works hard for my money, and haven't relied on my parents for dough since I was 15. I can't stand how people can just make assumtions because they THINK they know what is going on around them. And yet, you just have to let it roll off your back and not care at all what other people think, don't deny yourself of a good time. I hope that other people are as good at letting things roll off thier back as I am...hate to think that anyone is NOT having a wonderful time at a Phish show, that's what it's all about.
