I'm vegan and I cried when I read this. What if someone takes my baby away from me? This is one reason I'm glad to be having my baby at home. There won't be a chance they can take him away from me. Luckily all my health care providers have been very supportive. Still very frightening though!

This is ... outrageous. I honestly feel bad, reading that story. That's ridiculous, for the cops to rip the child from their father's arms, with no warrant?! Damn. That's just plain outrageous.

Honestly, sometimes I am joking, but not here. From what I have read the family would not except the nutritional supplements the nutritionist recommended, solely because of an idiotic obsession with using organic and "natural" food sources. A thing like this happened in Pennsylvania a few years back wear a family refused to have their baby treated because the doctors insisted on using modern medicine. The baby died and the parents were prosecuted, which is exactly what should have happened.

I sincerely hope that you realise that it is better for the baby to be raised properly by the state instead of by parents who refuse to use a supplement due to "processed sugar, and artificial colors and flavors, and preservatives". The misinformed parents also refered to "GE Soy based Formula, and other inorganic, GE products" as "these toxins", which sounds like the hysterical ramblings of a nature freak not fit to raise a child. They were rightly charged with resisting arrest as well.

"We also believe that they are trying to wean him from my breast on purpose. They are keeping my baby away from me because my beliefs are too radical and they want him to be weaned because of that very reason."

They are "weaning" him from the mothers breat because she refuses to eat properly so her milk is not nutritionally fit for a growing child. These parents should have the option of going to a school and taking a nutrition class OR they should be sterilized (at least the mother) because they are not fit to have children.

that is so terrible! aw man, what a fucking bummer, our nutrition and health ideas in this country are SOOOO fucked, our ideas in general are just so out of whack...

    i definatley signed that....

and those ARE TOXINS affdasasdf. you know rats ina study REFUSED to eat GE foods, and 7 of them out of 20 died after eating them? does this somehow not spell toxic? yeah it didnt to the fools doing th esutdy either, so most americans get to eat them now, which is something im not ENTIRELY opposed to, LOL....

    Kharakov:

So, hold on. Natural foods with no preservatives are now toxins, and foods laced with sucralose, sorbital, aspartame, hydrogenated oils, and only god knows what else, are "good" for you?

    Reality check, Kharakov.

This made me really sick when I read it yesterday. I was just holding on to my bf and kept on saying that can't be true.
I am not even a vegetarian, but am opposed to non organic and GE food and the use of allopathic medicines.
And Kharakov, stick to jokes. I laughed my ass off about your post in the "herbivore" thread yesterday, but what you said here is imo stupid.
The kid had an iron deficiancy, that's all and there are natural ways and supplements to balance that out. No need to stuff the boy with toxins, which indeed they are doing.
I sincerely hope that family will be united again, better yesterday than tomorrow.

I think you have to accept that there's a difference between following an extreme diet because you want too, and forcing a helpless baby to do the same. To my mind, any responsible vegan/veggie would allow their baby or small child meat (or at least dairy) until they are old enough to make up their own mind. It's simply not right to impose your beliefs on a helpless baby.

I'm sorry, this just seemed like a very ... non-thought-out statement.

It's simply not right to impose your beliefs on a helpless ... WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING?!

Hello, welcome to America, or any other country for that matter, where beliefs like religion, family importance, and TONS of other beliefs, are imposed on you since you are born!

When you're born, you have nothing. So your parents go out and teach you what they think is right. This baby's situation is no different than yours, mine, or anyon else's. We all learned from our parents.

Also, these parents have a much better idea of what is right. It's an extreme diet, but the majority of nutritionists and doctors will always tell you that so long as there is moderation, a vegetarian/vegan diet will be just as healthy if not healthier than one with meat, as long as you ensure that the baby is getting the right nutrients.

Now, think. The baby's ONLY deficiency was in iron, and that can be fixed just by feeding the baby more leafy greens and less fruits, or by supplementing.

You can take iron supplements that have only IRON in them, and not preservatives and all kinds of fillers.

GE foods ... look at them! They are loaded with things you can't even pronounce, let alone know what effect they have on the body! A natural diet will always be better than an artificial diet, because our bodies have evolved in such a way that a natural diet is what our bodies are accustomed to eating.

Also, in MY opinion, a responsible vegetarian or vegan would feed their baby what they think the baby should be eating (vegetables), and then when the child grows up, allow them to eat meat, if that's what they want.

Why should it be "eat meat first" and "ask questions later?" That's a stupid approach.

Also, that natural diet is NOT extreme. What is extreme is today's American diet. Loaded with so many things that our bodies were not designed to process. All kinds of chemicals, preservatives, additives, oils that hare hydrogenated, genetically modified, inorganic matter, grown with pesticides and TOXINS that are designed to KILL organisms.

And you call a natural diet extreme? That's preposterous!

There is a LOT more to this than the hyperbole on this "petition" would like you to beleive. I am a Lactation Consultant, and have been callled in on a number of FTT cases (failure to thrive) rarely if ever are children taken from the parents.

You need to read the real details of this case, it has more to do with parents who are making threats against HCPs and CPS workers and allowing a child to suffer an illness without treatment than a vegan diet. LOTS of vegans have children, it is not a reason CPS takes children.
Read the comments on this on the Parenting Forum, it will put it in a better perspective. And you will also see, that in spite of my being a Breastfeeding supporter to the max, I refused to sign this petition (not that internet petitions are even usable in court or to present to goverment officials in the first place)

PLEASE read the entire thread, INCLUDING the links lenamama provided. The father of this child threatened not only some HCPs and CPS workers, but actually threatened to kill the baby. AND he kidnapped the baby, and the child was NOT given to his mother. This is more an issue of a mentally ill parent than Veganism.

    PLEASE read this.

    umm, extreme diet?
that's a bunch of shit, when i was a 'small helpless baby' my parents forced me to eat meat, i think that's kinda shitty since my health is much better as a vegan. - shouldn't you be scolding the parents that let their children eat tons of junk food and mcdonalds daily?
there's nothing extreme or more harmful about a vegan diet, do you research
