may 1968....the ten days that shook the world...all univercities and auto plants occupied by students and workers......this and checkslovakia could have taken things down a different road ...but sadly did not .mexico was over 100x worse than kent +ohio state....they slautered 1000 people {and we herd nothing of it }tienamon square and prauge were news but when folks hit the streets{in the west , confronting capitolism+greed} in an open revolt against the boredom of everyday life and in an attempt to restructure human priorities twards unlimited pleasure...little notice was taken and it was written out of history....spain 1930s and the mexican rev are as well things worth doing some looking into...kids and oldsters alike find your local anarchist bookstore and question your own and others convienient historical revisions !

i'm not sad i wasn't born then, because I'm here now... the sixties, from what i have read etc (obviously i wasn't actually alive so if im wrong then i apoligise) the sixties were about peace, and love, a hope for a better world.

You can have all of that today; the good bits about the sixties can still be here if you let them. Just take your shoes off and go and sit in a feild; you could be in that feild in any decade of the last century.

Time isn't solid, it can't block out love or freedom or any other concept. It's just an illusion.

HippieDude 67---The old ones have spoken--and they know. There's enough excellent advice here ,that to put in my 2 cents worth ,would be to reiterate. Here's a penny's worth, though. This is not a democracy any more ,if it really ever was.Somehow you young ones have to figure out how to remove the money equation from elections. It is now an auction--so blatent that it's amazing that we (all of us) don't take to the streets again to see that it ends. Our legislators are 100% bought and sold by corporate interests. They do not give a shit about you or anyone else that can't give them money and /or power.Do you care?Do want to relive the 60's because we had good drugs and music --do you wish for changes from the way everything is now?(and is rapidly going downhill).-------------we were there--and it's true-there never was another time like that. But our day is over-now it's YOURS-and others like you.Oh,we'd be there with you young ones-if you really give a shit and try to do something viable ,like actually getting the young to vote these bastards out of there--or anything that would help this country to heal it's self.Burning SUVS or ripping up seats in a burger joint will accomplish nothing. What is needed is real activism-hundreds of thousands ,maybe millions to give a shit and do something through lawful means.REAL lawyers ,not the scumsuckers that most are--people who learn the law and use it against the fuckers that are presently attempting a coup on this land.We started it-you have to finish it.Maybe you didn't even read this--maybe it's too boring-what I say doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things-I realize it.If that's the case-ok--get stoned, wish your life away, watch TV--and buy more-buy more now.------------------(I really hope that's not the case)----scratcho---------

    Hi Sam,

my name ist Sabine and I`m from Germany. My nickname here is Heaven.
One of the German visitors told me your name here.
Today I found this forum and my heart was beating faster. Now I`m 25 years old and I`m interested in the 60ties since I was 16. At that time, I dressed like a Hippie and till today I listen to Dylan, Stones, CCR, Led Zeppelin and so on. I read much about that times and my room is full of pictures from then. But more than this, my heart is full of that time. (I hope you excuse my bad English!)

When I was 17, I began to write a story about a young German girl (later called Heaven), that went to San Francisco in 1968. There she met a girl, that took Heaven to her commune. The problem is, I have never been to San Francisco (do they call it Frisco?).
So my room was full of maps and I tried to write a book about a city, I´ve never been. Except of my dreams.
I wrote perhaps 100 big pages and than stopped in the middle. I had no more inspiration because of private ways.
Some days ago I read my "book" again and it caught me straight in the heart. I decided to improve it and complete the story.

The German member told me, you experienced this time.

I would be very thankfull, if you or some other members would tell some little things from time to time or answer some questions.

I would like to write my story till the end, because it`s so important to me.

Your statement to the young Hippie ;) touched me and gave me courage: what you nee instead of a time machine, is to make your world into what you`d like it to me. That is, what the 60`s were about.

    Love&Peace,

    Heaven

I don't call it Frisco, but some people do.

I don't call it Vagas either, but some people do.

Call it what you will... it's just another city just like all the rest. It does have more of its share of innovation though. But I think that it is special in people's minds... a Deification, a King Arthur's Court of sorts.

Sabine... There is nothing to forgive. Your English is a lot better than my German. No, I don't speak a word of German. I admire anyone who can tackle another language, and I truly mean that.

I would be more than happy to talk with you about anything you might wish. I have a Personal Forum called; Sam's Place, which you can get to by clicking on the hot link at the bottom of this reply... or, you can send me a personal message and I will send you my email address. Either way... I am honored and would welcome your thoughts.

    Love,

    Thanks for the hint!
I read, that the beatnicks called it "Frisco" in the early 60`s. But I never read it in books, that are up to date.
If I have enough money, I`ll come to see it by myself. But it`s very expensive for a student, especally the flight from Germany!

Can you tell me, if there is something left from the old days, perhaps in Haight Ashbury?

Well, the Free Clinic is still on the Northeast corner of Haight and Ashbury.

Did you know that Free Clinic is how we Oldsters became known as Freaks? At any given time we had one or two friends who needed medical care, so we said, "let's go down to the Free Clinic and throw peanuts at... Dave, or Joe, or whomever....

Say "Free Clinic" 3 times in a row, quickly. See what I mean?

Also, the head shops are still there, and there was a New Crop of street people hangin' around and throwing dirty looks at passers-by. When Ken and I were out there in 1990 we ran into a guy who must have been standing on the same corner for the past 30 years.

It looked the same to me, maybe not as filthy. A few Trendy Restaurants have taken a fragil foothold too.

But, across Stanton from the west end of Haight, is Golden Gate Park. This time around there were Flowers on all the plants. I don't think that the young flower children of my day thought about their Stripping the Park BARE of all the flowers. I didn't like picking flowers back then, still don't. Once you pick it... It's Dead. Pretty... but dead. Besides, the environmental impact of such a practice must have been devastating on the many species of Humming Birds and Bees whose population depended on those flowers for survival. They didn't think about that either.

Hippiedude67---sorry about the lecture on my last post-jeez-I must have had a bad day.I know what you mean about the 60s-I have often wished I could have been born in 1860--only horses for trans-no tvs,radios-ect.A harder but simpler way of living. When you get to be my age, there's a tendency to want to tell younger folks what to do.Gotta watch that shit.Enjoy your life dude--there's a lot of living to do .Good luck and happy trails--------scratcho------------
