1. Consumerism instills desires in us which are not really ours, thus compromising human freedom 2. "Free Will" is more or less a sham 3. The State is a contract, but it is not one that can be broken at will 4. The Social contract can be broken at will, even by individuals (through Civil Disobedience) 5. The State is merely a tool, utilized by the individual (in agreement with other individuals) for his protection and profit 6. A Principled and powerful individual must be protected from a majority (through provisions like vetoes and filibusters), and Legislators are people entrusted with full power to do good for a constituency and not representatives of their collective (or majoritarian) opinions. 7. The State is not simply a tool, but something that deserves reverence and obdience as well as something that provides for us 8. Intellectual Elitism is neccessary, and benifical for the cultural advancement of society 9. Selfishness is a virtue, not a vice 10. Every law-abiding indiviudal, regardless of his contributions to society is entitled to have his needs met, with "needs" not restricted to simply substinence, but to a complete sense of social well-being.
I'm not religious...at all...but I think selfishness is a vice, and selflessness is a virtue, as hard as it is to be selfless.....
Why does this add up to more than 100 percent? Number 5 sums it all up, a concise definition of government.
1. False 2. We don't know. 3. Depends on what part of the contract you break. Murder = bad. Disagreeing with the government = ok 4. Yes, unless you are being restrained by police officers. 5. In a perfect world the state would represent people cooperating for mutual gain. In reality it goes some way to achieving this but of course is not omnipotent super duper perfect. 6. Paradox. At the core of this is whether the mob values liberty or tyranny of the majority. Good leaders don't rise to positions of power when the situation is the latter. 7. Depends on the state. 8. Also paradoxical. Elitists are pseudo-intellectuals. Obscurantism is beneficial in situations such as military intelligence however. 9. Selfishness can be a vice or a virtue. 10. Social well being is subjective and thus irrelevant.
I most agree with 10, but disagree with the social well being bit as it is too ambiguous. There is also the fact that in some terrible situations not everyone's needs can be met and sacrifices have to be made for the greater good.
1,6 and 10. 1 outlines how we are all manipulated through campaigns and marketing, designed to incite mass hysteria. 6 outlines possible protections for local communities/societies/individuals against said mass hysteria based on marketing hype. 10 provides for the basic needs of the community/society/individual that fund the government. It should be considered a return on investment not entitlement. That's how the corporations look at it. They expect a return on their investments why shouldn't the citizens.
