This site - The worldwide HitchHikers agency - seems like a very good resource for hitchhikers, in case anyone is interested! There seems to be a few (..not many though TBH) rides offered in the UK for the June-July period - in case any of you are interested!

A lot of the rides offered are for free; others are far a small fee - but rarely as much as you would pay for public transport!

Sharing car-space makes sense to me, far more than one reason:

From the point of energy-efficiency, it obviously makes far more sense to have four people in one car, than to have four cars on the road with one person in each of them! Not to mention the potential for reducing traffic!

To me, it also seems to make sense financially: Let's say a return bus ticket for London-[wherever] costs 25 pounds. I don't drive, so I'm not familiar with petrol costs, but I will guess that for the same journey by car - for a car with an average engine-size - they are between 20 and 30 pound! If the car is carrying four people, it's evident that the cost-per-person would be about four times less than the cost payed by someone travelling on a bus.
