    I was sitting here minding my own business, and channel surfing and I happened upon what I thought was just some news broadcast. Suddenly, the report they were making sounded...biased and phony. And I was like, "What the...?"

    That's when I noticed that I was watching CBN News.

    I just wrote a huge essay for school about how wrong it is to put "The faith of Americans has won the victory" on a church's sign after the election.

    I'm just so worked up...I can't stand the tele-evangelist, conservative Christian George W. Bush strand of Christianity (which is, unfortunately, the face of much of American Christianity.)

    I don't know..maybe it's cause I'm a Lutheran...I'm always the odd woman out.

    I just experience freedom and love in Christ...and strength during good and bad times. I wish that CBN News would disappear. I ban them from my tv!! ;)

    anytime I see Pat Robertson on TV he always looks like he's thinking "Fools, they'll never find all those dead hookers I buried".

    Mainstream Christianity goes hand in hand with processed meat. A quick fix that is hazardous to your health.

    Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell types do put a very 'hard to stomach' face on the religious right.

    ~

    so which group is "mainstream christianity" :

    falwell & robertson & the right-wing "christian coalition"
    or
    ELCA lutherans & episcopalians & presbyterians & UCC & reform bodies?
    or
    baptist(s)
    or
    methodists
    or
    roman catholics
    or
    eastern orthodox
    or....

    ????????????????????????
    (obviously these folks are all going to hell because they don't all manifest the "gifts of the holy spirit" - which means talking in tongues (but may not mean drinking poisons, handling serpents, etc...), right?)
    (didn't st paul say something about even talking in the tongues of angels meaning nothing if not accompanied by "love"?)

    ~~~
    (& then, of course, there's always the good ol' gnostic redeemer zen lutheran church n.a.ltd.pty.)(ymmv)
    actually, accepting the gifts of the holy spirit is standard practice for most christians...
    but not every christian is going to be able to "show the fruits" of every gift...
    and "showing" is sometimes "showing off" (or even just "fitting in"...)
    and if a person is unable to "really speak in tongues" (whatever that means), is that sufficient reason to tell 'em that they aren't "really saved"?
    (i have heard somewhere that the part of hell reserved for lutherans is especially cold ;) ...)(of course, that could have been from a catholic, heh...)
    ~
    so, since we are told that those who are in christ will be able to drink poison & handle serpents, do you swallow strychnine, or dance with rattlesnakes?
    (i just love it when a pentecostal believer tell me that if i don't exhibit glossolalia, i am not a true christian...)
    Actually, it was Christ himself that said you must be born of water and the Spirit. The example of Spiritual baptism is given in Acts two when one hundred and twenty spoke in tongues (including Mary, Acts 1:15).
    "glossolalia" - A fancy term given by psychologists who simply cannot grasp the idea a God-given gift. (yes, I am a psychology major). I am not stating that those whom suffer from Schizophrenic do not display some sort of fabricated speech, however, this differs greatly from speaking in tongues. I, myself, speak in tongues, and I do not suffer from any underlining conditions.
