I currently am working 2 jobs - one at a craft store, the other is doing tarot readings for people. The tarot's doing well, although not dependable enough to be a steady income, and the craft store is.

Up until now I loved working there, the people are so nice and - well, come on, it's a craft store! Totally fun. But recently there was a bit of a shift in management and the new manager has started doing craft classes, as of this month (June). I think it's a brilliant idea, it'll bring in a lot of customers, potentially, which is the whole point of doing the classes in the first place.

    My three problems:

#1: I've been told back in nov/dec that if I wanted to teach classes, I'd be paid not as an employee, but as an instructor, which is 75% of the fee that people pay for the class, which potentially starts at $50 a pop, assuming there are enough people signed up for the class. This has changed - the classes have now been conveneintly scheduled during our regular shifts, which means we'll be paid as employees, which is minimum wage, and the company keeps the entire sign up fee.

#2: because these classes are during our shifts, we are now not only expected to teach the class, but run around the store taking care of cash, phones, and other customers in the store, which is just plain rude and I know the people who've paid for the class are going to complain about that, but for some reason my manager doesn't see this as a potential problem.

#3: We're not advertising for the classes. Granted, we do have signs for them, but they're in such poor locations in the store that people barely notice them. I have no idea why we can't put a sign in the door at least, where customers can see them (because that would only make sense, right?) but the manager doesn't want signs in the door.

I need to find somewhere else to work. I feel like I'm getting kind of screwed over a bit.

Sounds like your new store manager's having second thoughts about the classes. These tactics have a sort of passive-aggressive feel to them. Constant interruptions of the classes will definitely be a problem, if you are expected to do both jobs at once, and you certainly won't be able to give your 'students' the attention they have paid for... but then again, if you aren't being paid properly for teaching them, then why teach them properly? That's a passive-aggressive stance as well, but under the circumstances it seems you have little choice; either take that stance or feel guilty about the quality of your work... or you could simply bow out of teaching the classes (that isn't really in your job description and if you get fired for not doing them, I think you might at least be able to collect unemployment... or more if you are the litigious type).

That's kind of the thinking I have going into these classes, I hate to say.

It really sucks because these classes are a fantastic idea and potentially can generate a lot of business for the store, I just feel like crap because I'm being screwed out of the money.

are canadians meant to be stupid or something?, first i've heard of it.
but yeah, i doubt there is another store near you is there, cos if there was you could get a transfer to another store, but being a craft store i wouldn't of thought so

It seems like so many places of employment are expecting entirely too much of their employees, yet are unwilling to compensate them with higher wages or improved benefits. Instead, they keep piling more and more work upon them, and they'll continue doing so unless you speak up. If they don't want to come to a compromise, or if they don't want you to leave because they value your presence and feel that you are a good employee (which are hard to find!), they'll probably try to work with you. If not? Screm 'em. Wave bye-bye.

Good luck to you cerridwen. :)
