I believe all of the hippies we see from the 60s and 70s were a result of singers creating the hippy fad. Thus, the true "hippy spirit" has nothing to do with hemp, drugs, tie-dye, long hair, or even music. These things were just the style of the time. I just realized how hippy my friends parents are. I mean, besides the obvious things that attribute to ones hippy style such as the music they listen to, their political beliefs and the general way they act, they are hippy to the core. I never realized it, but they live the true hippy ideals. They are so kind towards everyone. THey give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and if they are ever offended they just have a "whatever let it go lets go our separate ways" attitude. Instead of being flashy and screaming for peace and protesting (the usual hippy style) they are very subtle in their ways, but they are as hippy as can be. Its really great to see true hippies in action. Ones that truly live the ideals instead of simply following the fad they grew up around. This is why im starting to see the whole "hippy culture" thing as sort of silly. I mean the thigns that kids do now, tie-dye shirts, hemp necklaces, protests, are just fueling a long outdated fad. These things have nothing to do with the hippy spirit. Thats why its true that we all have a bit of hippy inside of us. Hippy is loving compassion for our fellow humans. Those who are full blown hippiy's are those who fully grasp the concept of brotherhood of man.
you could say that in two sentences. You got your hippies and your true hippies. True hippies are selfless people and hippies wear tiedye and protest and shit.
Yeah, but i figured people have heard that before and just brushed it off. People need explaining before they really understand anything.
Well you have to ask yourself why do you wear those things? If you had never seen another hippy in your life, would you think to wear hemp necklaces and shaggy, colourful clothing?
i wear T-shirts and jeans all the time, and i listen to all types of rock. I think i think like a hippy, I do the hippy drugs, but i go to metal shows and like the darker side of things. WTF am I? Take the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's and throw them in a blender and viola. A metalhead hippy punk stoner freak.
Well at the time it was more than just trying to look cool. When all the uptight business people are wearing suits, and that is what is expected of you, wearing tie dye means something. Wearing the jewelry, the hemp, going barefoot, it's all a way of saying Fuck you to everything you don't want to be. It also serves the purpose of unity. The idea is to create a counter culture, and appearance certainly plays a role in that. But, of course you're right in that wearing anything just to fit a particular role and be something you aren't inside is just lame. And I do believe I've overanalyzed this yet again. Peace
