Potheads: A Drain on Society?

Many highly intelligent pot smokers, philosophers, and members of the scientific community such as myself, Carl Sagan, and Issac Aismov, know well what a drug can do to expand the mind.
However, it is also clear that a growing majority of the youth who aquire marijuana use it in an irresponsible manner. For example, many of the posters on this forum seem to be stagnant; in both their academic and personal lives, they are failing. They remember nothing in school, make little effort to pursue new knowledge or new relationships. They look for jobs, rather than careers.
You people need to clean up your act. You give drugs a bad name. You need to learn that you can use drugs and still make something of your lives. If you take life more seriously and apply yourself, even people with low IQ's can succeed.

who are you to judge anyone on this forum, you have probably never met anyone on here, you don't know what how these people live their lives, some may not be as perfect as yours. some of these kids might not have the oppertunities you have, some of them might not even have parents(me for one). and please explain to me what it is to succeed?

I'm a pothead and have tried a lot of drugs before, and I have also held an all A average since I was 9. I don't think I'm a drain on society. You are talking about specific people, not all us "pot smokin teens" in general. Also people have a lot of different views on life. Some people really may not want a career at this point in their lives. I know I don't. I'm more worried about the exams I have to pass in two weeks. That's why so many kids, like me, aren't thinking about every step in their future, cuzz we aren't there yet. It is a controversial subject. Everyone has different views on what it is to succeed.

alot of people who smoke weed and go to school high or smoke and do realy realy good in school and i know people who smoke and do realy bad in school,i know people who dont smoke and do realy realy good in school,i know people know dont smoke and do realy realy bad in school,drugs have nothing to do with how you do in school most people that want to do good do drugs or no drugs do, i see what your saying but this is a not a black and white subject i think drugs are very mis used i know i have misused them but i no longer do,but i someone uses drugs and fucks up life has nothing to do with drugs even if they stop they will still fuck up,same with people who do realy well in life,also what you think is sucessful in life in different then what i think or any body else thinks,hell if iwant to live on the side of the road in a fucking box and that makes me happy and i have a good life who are you to say its not

there is more to life than doing well in school.... intelligence and grades are two seperate things... the most important thing, more important than success in school and success in business and careers, is your state of mind... knowing yourself and being happy.

He's making a decent point. I don't know about his reference to the people on this forum (who I don't know well enough at all to say that), but it's true that so many people are idiots with drugs, including weed. They don't seem to appreciate what it could be, and just use it to "get fucked up." Not only is the attitude wrong, but these sorts of people do stupid shit while their stoned. In my eyes, going to school or work stoned is totally irresponsible. It bugs me when my coworkers do it, and it always bugged me when my classmates did. I'm ALL for smoking, but in a responsible way, on your own time.

I will make the argument, though, that college and careers are not for everyone. If everyone was a college grad, who would be the janitors, city workers, construction laborers, etc? Illegal immigrants? That's a stupid solution. Don't hate because someone doesn't view success in life in the same, college and career based way that you do.

And the picture of an abused woman is in pretty bad taste, by the way

great post. i have noticed lots of younger kids (ha kind of like me at that age) dont smoke pot responsibly. i too am a straight up stoner but now maintain to keep my ass in high standings in the honors program at my college.

 

That is a huge overstatement if I ever saw one. I've seen kids get their lives ruined over drugs, but the majority of the kids I know who use drugs do so in a fairly responsible manner (speaking mostly about pot). Yeah there are alot of people who smoke pot and abuse it and fail to suceed in their lives because of it. But ask yourself, how many of these kids would be suceeding without the pot? How were they doing before they started smoking. Most of the time they were doing just as bad before. Pot doesn't make people irresponsible, and just makes the irresponsiblility in people more obvious since they have the excuse that they are stoned.

And I fail to see how personal failure in certain aspects of ones life is a drain on society. How many people out there are stealing and killing for weed. Not many at all (basically none excluding gang members, big dealers etc.)

Your point sucks, and I know this is going to sound cliche, but this is all bassed off of your opinion of what happiness is. If someone is happy smoking for theyre entire life - let them live that way - They are hurting noone but themselves, even according to your standards.

All in all I'm saying that I'd like to hear from you how exactly a pothead is a drain on society - assuming that they fit into the steriotypical critera that you listed.
