I stepped on some glass yesterday when I stepped out of my shower. I'd accidently knocked over a glass jar a few days ago and thought that I'd cleaned up the shards, all of them...but apparently, I had left a few.... Now my foot is sore and it hurts to walk. And I thought barefooters didn't have to worry about glass
It's weird how people are always warning us about barefooting out in the streets, but I hear about people getting a splinter or stubbing toes at home as often as not... I also got a tiny splinter (not bad enough to hurt after I removed it, fortunately) at home after my mom had dropped a glass in the kitchen... and now yours in the bathroom... places where many of those people who warn us about glass on the street would go barefoot without a thought. And I stubbed my toe pretty bad in my own bedroom a couple times too (once cut it, and once broke it)... okay that last is mainly my fault for not picking up & living in a pretty cramped appartment... like left a chair in the middle of the room and the other time I'd left the vacuum cleaner out... so then when I go to the restroom in the middle of the night and I'm not really awake I run into stuff But still, hurt myself inside more than outside, really...
It's fantastically ironic that it happened in a way that could have happened to absolutely anyone. When your out and about in public places naturally you're aware of the potential dangers, and that more than anything else is the best protection against injury. You know you've not got any shoes on so you change your behaviour and focus your attention accordingly. It's common sense more than tough skin (although it is both) that will keep you safe. Shoe-lovers of course just assume that those that go barefoot do things in the same way as themselves. When you're wearing shoes you don't worry about glass or anything else, so they assume that when you're barefoot you still don't. Of course they think this because when they're insituations where they ARE barefoot they must feel it is safe, like the shower or the beach for example, and so they won't think or act any differently from when wearing shoes. And I suppose barefooters are the same in those situations. They switch off that natural caution and attention to what's on the ground in front of them taking for granted that they're not going to come to any harm. Holly, if that glass had been on a pavement in front of you as you were walking along, you wouldn't have got hurt. Even if you hadn't seen it until it was right in front of you, the way you would have stepped, the way you would have put your weight on your feet, and the way you observed the ground in front of you would have kept you safe.
It happened to me once... I was walking barefeet out in the woods and you know how it goes, ouch! But I taught it will be more painful... anyway!
I think it's weird how people in general (mostly the ones who don't go barefoot!) make such a big deal out of minor barefoot injuries. So many people ask if I'm not afraid to get hurt, if I never step in glass... but they never ask if I'm not afraid to get a paper cut when I pile my groceries in a cardboard box, or if I'm not afraid to get a splinter or thorn when I'm gardening without gloves... Nor do I think I've ever seen a thread on any forum about anyone saying "Hey, I opened up an envelope today and I cut my finger!" There's just some reason people think feet, in particular, are different from the rest of our body.
Ah glass.... Well, what can I say... at the height of the summer, I've definitely stumbled barefoot through glass without a scratch. Generally, if your feet are tough, you don't have to worry about stepping on it with the pads of your foot. However, sometimes glass or other sharp shit seems to find its way up into the soft part... I've had it happen - strangely, it's never happend outside, but instead, it's happened in my own kitchen when a roomate didn't clean up broken glass. In any case, just make sure you keep the wound clean.... that might mean not barefooting for a few days. It sucks I know, but if it festers, you might miss out on a whole season, and that would be a tragedy. happy footing.
Yeah, this glass incident happened just outisde a shower though, which means it could happen to anyone because no-one expects it and so takes for granted that they can be as careless as they like and not get hurt. As we already said, if it had happened out in the street where you half expect it, it wouldn't have been an issue.
exactly right. I was hurt just stepping out of a shower. Everyone feels safe barefooted in a shower. If I had been on the street, it wouldn't have happened.
:& OUCH! my feet are tough but glass will cut me too. Be sure to wear a bandage if you go barefoot until it heals. Ive heard of nasty infections caused by exposed cuts on your feet.
The only time I've had a serious foot injury is when my stupid roomate broke a glass inside the house and didn't tell anyone. Long story short... I stepped right on a very very jagged piece from a broken drinking glass - laid me up for a week!!! I tell you.. I've been barefoot outside on all sorts of things... I've barefooted through broken bottles, beer cans, and other sharp nasties outside. Quite frankly, barefooting wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for human carelessness! Fuck... I'm moving to New Zealand where the chances of barefoot injury are zero to none....
