Im just begining to learn about this religion (Self-Realization Fellowship) and I am loving what it stands for and their beliefs. I was wondering if anyone else had ever heard of it or practiced it? Right now im reading Autobiography of a Yogi which is by Paramahnasa Yogananda who organized it. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone practiced it. Thank you.
You just attacked someones religion... just because they are not YOUR beliefs do not make them Bad beliefs and do you even know anything about it? And it goes back to the concepts of yoga which most certainly is NOT new age junk.
Paramhansa Yoganada was a great yogi and teacher, and his writings are great. I can't say anything about his followers to-day I'm afraid.
Dearest Hipkatmeow, I have been in the past very moved by the teachings of SRF...Paramahansa Yogananda's teachings are def. something that I know that I will keep with me always...they have changed my life more than I can say. Though I am not, and don't know if I will be, a practicing member of SRF, I can say that I do follow many (not all) of his teachings. But def. read his other books (not just AoY)...they are all worth while for his beautiful words that teach us how to love God. *Peace and Love* Nicole
Nicole- I do Intend to read more of his teachings.. They really do teach us how to love God with all of our heart and soul! Im not sure if I will ever be a practicing member of SRF either but I am looking in to more of his teachings and possibly taking the SRF lessons and maybe attending SRF services... This is the first "organized religion" that has ever made sence to me. Love Kat!
Dearest Kat, I just got the form for the lessons in the mail...but I don't know if I'm going to because I'm a soon to be poor college student...but I talked to someone online who goes to the services in Boston (where I'm going to uni in the fall) and I might go to a few... But I think the greatest thing...if none of that stuff pans out is to read the books, learn all you can, and live it. They are more of lessons to live by than an organized religion as far I can say. Best of luck and perhaps we can chat sometime. *Peace and Love* Nicole
One of my favorite quotes of all time from Paramahansa Yogananda: When you worry, there is static coming through your mind radio. God's song is the song of calmness. Nervousness is the static; calmness is the voice of God speaking to you through the radio of your soul. Man. That's brilliant.
unitarian churches are cool i discovered the other day, they basically dont care what you call yourself and you just persue what you feel to be true, i think a lot of their tradition and foundation is based on jewish and christian stuff, but their certainly not closed minded are stuck up on that.
Dear Nicole, I completly agree with you. The best thing to do is to live it. I intend on reading as much as I can and living as pure and good of a life that I can... whether I do the lessons or go to services I suppose does not matter as long as I can live a pure happy life devoted to God. I would love to talk to you sometime... I have an Aol Screen name its kittyhappyfun if you ever want to talk! Molly- I absolutly LOVE that quote it is beautiful and wonderful and simply brilliant! Thank you for sharing that with us! DO you know a lot about SRF and Paramahansa Yogananda and his teachings? THank you once again for that quote! Stranger- Isnt it great to finda church that is so open minded... although they are more a combination of christianity and hinduism than Christianity and Judism. Thank you all! Love kat!
SRF is based on Hindu philosophy, ad really, it is the same philosophy behind every religion. Paramahamsa Yogananda was the discple of Sri Yukteswar Maharaj, one of India's great spiritual masters. Yoganandji was truly great himself. It makes me glad to hear you have found solace in spiritual pursuit. God bless you.
I like that one too... This is one of my favourite and one that had gotten me through many times of trouble: "Never let life beat you down. Beat life! If you have a strong will you can overcome all dificulties. Affirm, even in the midst of trials: "Danger and I were born together, and I am more dangerous than danger!" This is a truth you should always remember; apply it and you will see that it works. Don't behave like a cringing mortal being. You are a child of God!"
