On the way home the other day I was looking at the trees and forest area and a thought came to mind. Is furniture bad for the environment? (Not the furniture itself, but rather the manufacturing and harvesting of resources.) Most people only use it for a relatively short time and throw it out and replace it for new pieces. Can it be recycled? I know that a lot is sold at thrift stores but for the most part it is destroyed. Any thoughts?
Well, a solid wood dining room set would last a long time. I have one, and if it's taken care of, it'll be around longer than me. Things like couches (or sofas or chesterfields) wear out and need to be re-upholstered, which is really expensive to have done for you, so it is cheaper to just get a new one. You could DIY, but most people wouldn't bother. I have a set that is wearing out, and I plan to try out my skills on it before giving up. Libraries are great for that kind of information.....
go to the hardware store and lumber yard and get yourself a drill, a saw, a phillips screw driver, and a bunch of sheetrock screws. the hard iron kind. then make the shapes you need. desks, wall to wall shelving. bed and couch fraimes and so on. think about the space you have and how it best suits and gratifies you to use it. remember, it ain't fur nature, its fur what you want to make of it. also you might want to get some water based stain and then some clear urithane to seal it with. much much much more gratifying then indenturing yourself to a lot of overpriced crap that's mostly only good for trying to impress other idiots who don't need impressing. one thing i would buy though, might be a couple of nice comfie chairs on roll arounds to work in. but forget about those stupid shin buster tables. unless you actually plan on sitting on the floor to use them. that or put real legs on them so their high enough to be good for something.
