hey everyone. i was wondering if someone here could explain to me how to gather. my sewing teacher told us to sew two rows of a big stitch and then pull the thread to make it gather, but when i did it for one of my skirts it took so long and it was a real pain. so if anyone could tell me a different way that would be great. thanks.

That's what I do. I baste stitch two lines and pull those to make the fabric gather. It does take a long time and I'm not very good at it...but that's the only way I have ever made ruffles.

Thats pretty well how you do it, but what I like to do, and it makes it a lot easier so there's less of a chance to break the thread...is:

Make your two basted rows, and in each row, at one end, pull the top thread up so you can see the little teeny loop it makes, then pull that thread up with a pin or something small. Do that for each row on ONE end. Then just gather as usual :D

The trick I learned was to baste two lines and turn the tension really loose and then put the bobbin thread.. It pulls through like butter

Another way is to zig-zag over a piece of string. Just be careful not to catch it in the stitching! :D

    ya'll are crazy.

    or maybe its just me...

For ruffles I just cut my ruffle piece way long. Then to attach it, i'll stitch a bit then do a small pleat (sp?)..stitch a bit, then pleat..sitch a bit..you get the idea. I have done it the way you guys are talking about..and still do if i need to attach a piece that must be exact in size (like a bodice to a dress or top) but for ruffles i just wing it. lol :)

I do one line too, and leave alot of extra at each end. Also, if the piece you're gathering isn't too long you can tie off one end anf just gather from the other end, helps some.

if you have a serger and adjust the tension of the machine, it will gather for you :D

With a serger, you adjust the feed dogs so the front ones are pushing faster than the back....Then you kind of put your hand at the back and make the fabric feed through even slower.
