so, I've been vegetarian for 3 years now and I'm really interested in making my diet healthier... I have serious salt cravings and occasional sugar cravings... When I can I try to eat so much fruits, veggies and healthy foods that theres no space in me for junk foods but its hard to always eat 6 times a day... What do you guys do?
it might be helpfull if you have one day a week when you can endulge yourself. thats what i do at school. either friday or saturday night, i'll endulge, sometimes i'll slip up and endulge on both friday and saturday, but those are the nights i go out drinking, so whatever...i can get back on track during the week. water is also good. your body just might need more water. other than that, now you just have to will yourself to not endulge. its hard, but it can be done.
if your just eating fruits and veggies, initially its gonna be hard for you to feel filled up, but its worth the trip i bet, you just gotta do it gradually. the body is alkaline, and so are almost all plant based foods, so they flow right through our bodies without trouble like they are meant to... do you eat whole grains? bread or certain rice-like foods or cereals(with soymilk which is MUUUCH healthier and tastier IMO than cow milk)) or some other things that are delicious and very filling. if you eat white bread, switch to whole anything, whole wheat, 9 grain whatever, and youll feel much more full and content after your meal. and if your eating a decent amount of fruit, your probably not REALLY craving sugar, unless you used to be really big on it which is very possible i guess. try organic kiwi fruit, its absolutley delicious and the 50 seeds inside are more sour than most candies when you chew into them, its natures candy i think... try fasting, google it sometime and theres a ton of good reads. youll develop a whole new relationship with your body and chances are you wont desire overly pungent or junk foods anymore....and if your interested in becoming more healthy which is something i would definatley advocate to anybody, look into andrew weils natural healing and medecine, your local library might carry it. or anything by andrew weil is probably worth looking at, or any book on raw foods or anything like that. and i would definatley cut dairy out of your diet if your into health, that shit is terrible for you, as are most animal based products..... i find it all very interesting, and its something i am really interested in, how our insides work and the body works and how we respond, its all so vast and complex within such a small thing and theres soooooooooo much to learn about it,truly.... most people have no IDEA about how their body functions, and most people who are educated in that type of thing probably think i have no idea either but im probably a lot better off than most.... and the information is constantly changing i imagine as is everything......
Hey meep, I've been there, and I know how tough it is the first few weeks. Definitely quit all salt. Many vegs think they're craving pizzas & steaks, but what they're really craving is the salt (typical vegetarian meals are low in salt, so they don't satisfy). But the good news is that your salt addiction passes quickly if you cut cold turkey. Try no salt for 5 days (and I mean zero--check the ingredients in everything). Then your mind will be in total control, and you can choose what foods are best for you. Like stranger said, a fast can do wonders, too. That'll speed up the detox process, and your salt/junkfood cravings will disappear in half the time.
