Sun will fade tats like it will fade a lot of pigments. We're talking over a lifetime, not over a summer. Still, its a good idea to put on sunscreen(prevents cancer too) and wear clothing to cover the tat as much as possible.

I'm a lifeguard as well, and I usually wear a long sleave rash guard to keep the sun off me. It keeps me from being burnt and saves my tat. Also, if you get in the water every once in a while, the moisture will keep you cooler than if you were shirtless.

    Peace

From what I've heard, your tattoo is most vulnerable to fading within the first year of getting it.(I don't know for sure though)
That's why I'm definetly going to wait until fall to get the one on my back done, I don't want it to fade right away.
A girl I went to highschool with got a tattoo on her lower back of butterflies and flowers(original eh?), she goes to the tanning salon year round and it is so faded already that she needs to get it done-over. It is only a year old.

I've seen some nasty nasty shit happen with fresh tattoos and the sun...

need I say: flaky blister scabs that bubble up?

also, if you tattoo is fresh, the worst possible thing you can do is go swimming and get it wet and chlorinated. If it doesn't get infected,it will cause premature fading and more pain than necessary
