.biz is a generic top-level domain intended for domains to be used by businesses

.net is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System.

.com is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System

.org was one of the original top-level domains, established in January 1985, originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs. Now anyone can register a .org domain. .org was the commonly recommended for use by individuals, although .name and .info are now alternatives.

    This article should help.

There really wasn't a direct extension meant for general personal websites until .name came around (not sure when). Most people end up using .com simply because it's the most well known extension, but it's technically wrong. I don't know how long .US and other country codes have been available, but these are probably the most technically correct other then .name to use for personal websites.
