Sorry it's been so long since I've posted! Been busy incubating! So I had my first appointment with a midwife at the center we're having our baby through. Steve and I walked in the front door and there was about ten ladies spread out in the waiting room folding and stamping fliers. Each of them either had a baby in a sling, draped on a lap, attached to a boob or sleeping under a blanket next to them. There was at least a dozen kiddies under the age of four playing all over the place, you had to step over them to get in the door. :) Everyone said hi and welcome as soon as they saw us. When the midwife was leading us to her office, she would stop every few feet and stroke a babies head or pop a pacifier in a babies mouth. It was great! They gave me a full work up and she was so obviously knowleadgable about what she was doing. She talked to us the whole time, and they let Steve stay in the whole time, even while giving me a pap smear! He got to hear the babies heart beating. (The little bugger moved away when I tried to listen, grrr!) It was wonderful! We are very satisfied with them, and can't wait to have our baby, at home, with such wonderful ladies attending.

    that sounds so sweet.
my doc's office sounds similar...my doc is basically the number one guy to go to here if you're pregnant, so whenever I go for my appointments, there's a tons of kids and lots of ladies with big bellies, lol. It's cute!

Awesome! So hard to find a good baby care provider these days. Midwives are great!

Best of luck with your pregnancy and home birth.

Oh man, that sounds wonderful!!! Where are you located? Do you have insurance that covers home-birth and a midwife? I wanted to do this, but I just couldn't afford to fork over the cash for it. Since my insurance only covered a regular OBGYN and hospital birth, that's what I ended up doing. I made my space as home-like as possible. I got a doula. We were left alone pretty much the whole time we were there, at my request. So, wasn't all bad, but still would've like to have had my babes at home. You are blessed.

Lena, we live in Washington, DC. Birthcare is in Arlington, VA. We actually got pregnant quite by surprise. My insurance doesn't cover anything baby related, and until we get hitched I'm not covered by his insurance, thought the baby will be the moment he's born. I'm lucky that Steve can and is willing to pay cash out of pocket. The whole birth will cost roghly $5500.00. That includes all pre-natal care, post-natal care, supplies, and the cost of the birth attendant. Then of course we did have a sonogram and thats something they refer you out for, so that was a few hundred too. Babies are expensive! The cool thing about Birthcare is they have a payment plan. You have to be all payed by week 36 though, but if you do it by week 32 they give you $200 off. A healthy vaginal hospital birth costs $10-$1200.00 bucks, double if there are complications. And the chances of "complications" in a hospital birth are very significant. You'd think insurance companies would jump at the chance to let you do it at home for cheap!

That's so true!! I know that my friend is very against traditional medicine, and she goes to a chiropractor and an accupuncturist for most of her ailments. She has Kaiser insurance and they actually paid for her to see her accupuncturist for her carpel tunnel. Guess they figured that it would be cheaper than surgery. It really works well for her.

Sorry to change the subject, but what I'm hoping is that they figure it out, and one day most insurances will cover this kind of thing. Then the whole concept of "Childbirth is not an Illness" might catch on, though. Know what I mean?
