Hmmm, check your thread tension. I found that if it's too loose (top or bottom) it gets like that.

I'll Check that, But I don't think thats the problem. It's not the thread thats getting Bunchy, it's the fabric around the applique. It's like the fabric inside of the applique is too big for the outside of the fabric.

[IMG]Okay. Here is a picture. It doesn't even look that bad in the picture. It looks much worse in person. That is as flat as it will lay. And they always look like this when ever I try one.

What kind of fabric is that? Cord and what? I'm wondering if you're streching the fabric as you sew it on maybe? Hmmm, dunno otherwise.

Lena it is a thin whale cord. Could I be stretching it. Corduroy doesn't seem to have much elasticity to it. How to I move it without pulling on the fabric?

Supermommy that is 3 passes with the stitch. It seems to get worse the more I go over it.

yeah that makes sense..its going to cuz the fabric is too thin for that much stitching...too much thread on it is probably makin it bunch up..

Do you think if I put a Stabalizer behind it that it would help. Mabey I'll try it, I didn't even think of it till now.

it would probably help..im so anal bout everything i would rip the stiches off first n try again...but thats just me...

any appliques i do are totally heat bonded first..it helps them not move as im stitching them and i really try to watch it, as it can bunch so easily on thinner fabric..
i always too, do a test run on similar fabric...not a whole applique but just a few stitches...
    i hope this helps ya...

    lol @ hey you...
its usually the zig zag stitch with the length set between 0 and 1 on mine..the width is usually in the middle or towards the 3-4 range...
did that even make any sense at all? lol

Patchy_Chick-sometimes its best to just put it down...ive massacred many an applique by messing with it when i shoulda tried it with fresh eyes...good luck!

Did you say you went over it 3 times? Whoa....too much thread in one place. :D Once should be enough, that's a lot of stitchin'.

I heat bond my appliques first. You could even hand-baste it in place first if you don't want to use a heat bond.

Daisy one of the reasons I go over it that many times is that i set the stitch length at 3, so its very far apart. If I put it tight it gets stuck under the presser foot.

Maybe you could practice with a shorter stitch length?.......the stitches are side by side that way.....when you go over and over, they get stacked up and too thick to lay flat.

    Hey~
I use wonder under with all appliques~and I use stitch and tear pinned on the back with any fabric thinner than corduroy~I use to have this problem when I first started sewing~first of all even if the applique is pinned down I still think the applique moves around like crazy~Try the stabalizer and the stitch and tear~you won't believe the difference~Have fun!
