I'm in deep doo-doo. I recently was assigned the task of extracting info from a persons hard drive onto our company network. Obviously I thought "aah piece of cake, I'll just add the stupid thing as a salve and move the files"; but to my surprise, the damn thing couldn't even be seen by the master. It didn't even allow the PC to boot.:(

So I condemned the damn thing straight into the disposal box. Now my boss says the info on that drive is very important and it needs to be recovered come rain or shine. Did I mention that I'm up for appointment as a Senior Network Controller?? Anyway, if I can manage to get the thing back to life without corrupting of formatting the files contained, I'm bound to get some serious brownie points.

Somebody please help, Matt are you out there!!?!!?!?!? Anyone?!?! Heloooooo!?!?!!:(

How do I get the Hard drive back in good working condition?

Did you change the jumper settings on the slave? Was it detected in the BIOS?

Somehow I don't think this is something you can fix. I bet when they unplugged the thing from its machine, they shorted it out by the power supply cable.

Google for "ERD Commander". It should be able to fix your situation. I believe I know someone that can get you a free version if you need it. Just PM me and let me know. Peace

As long as you have a computer that will post you should be able to recover files from the dead drive. My brothers 80Gig just lost it's NTFS table and XP, 98 and DOS wouldn't recognize anything on the drive. So I put my old X-Box drive in there and installed XP on that drive. From there I ran file recovery apps and had no problem getting the files back from the dead drive..

Sorry to be a party pooper, but none of these suggestions will work. Any data recovery application will still require the HD to be recognised by the BIOS. Matt's probably right. If the HD ain't visible to the BIOS, chances are it's taken a jolt and it's dead.

Possibly, but he only tried it as a slave to the current master. Try different configurations and jumper settings.

The Bios should STILL read it as a device by the manufacturers mark.
    IE: Quantum 4400X etc.....

they use that ERD Commander program I think.

but...if it's fried...i think there's some places that can do data recovery, but you'll have to pay.

then again...what's that promotion worth to you?

your fired. better yet kill your self or tell the idiot boss to back important stuff on another drive or store it and is not your problem for being a cheap bastard.

  13. freeze it, if the bearings are bad (which on olde olde drives makes the whole thing invisible sometimes) freezing it can loosen it up plastic bag to keep out water, even double plastic bag, the cold not the water is what you want, has saved a few of my old hard drives

    Guys guys guys,

I tried most of the above sugestions but still nothing works. I think the damn thing probably short-circuited or it unexpectedly lost power or had a power surge or something. Now it's started making this funky sound. You know, like the needle is bouncing between the disks or something. I can't really explain it I'm slowly getting frustrated bythis piece of junk.

It's worth everything. I seriously need this job. It's about R 111 580 p.a.<<- I don't really know what the US$ - Rand exchange rate is. But it's a hell of a lot of money for someone with only 10 months' experience!!! :H

That's One hundred and eleven thousand five hundred and eighty Rand per annum. And I don't really think it's worth the trouble... he's [we've] given up on it anyway

ok...i think i looked that up right, and it looks like it's about 7 rand to the 1USD.

    so, 111,580 / 7 is 15940, so he's looking at an increase of $16,000US a year?
