Ok, sorry to start another completely worthless thread, but im having an argument with a friend of mine.

about a month and a half ago, she missed her period and took a pregnancy test and it turned out positive, then 7 days later she started bleeding and went to a doctor. While at the doctor, they gave her another test and it was negitive. the doctor didnt check her out any further because he said it was a false positive and she was just late, thats all.

Now, im 21, never been to college for medicine, never been pregnant, but i am pretty damn sure there is no such thing as a false positive. the plus sign is ONLY going to show up if you have the pregnancy hormones in your urine. Now she is having abdominal cramping and pain and is refusing to go to the doctor. I told her that she most likely had a miscarriage because there werent enough hormones present in her body to keep her pregnancy going, hence the negetive test several days later. I told her that the cramping and pain is serious and she might still have tissue inside of her body and she needs to get it taken care of because she might have a nasty infection.

She said im not a doctor and have no business giving medical advice to anyone.

am i totally off my rocker? or is she?

I've been pregnant four times, I have three children, two of which are twins, and I have had two miscarriages as well, one being before my oldest son was born, and the second being afterwards, right before I conceived my twins.

My second miscarriage was a very early one. I had taken a pregnancy test a week before I was even due for my period and it showed up very faintly positive (we had decided to try to conceive again and I was anxious to see if we had succeeded). About four days after my period would have normally been due, I woke up to abdominal cramping, and I was bleeding. My husband thought maybe the pregnancy test that I had taken gave me a false reading for some reason, but I knew that wasn't the case. I immediately called my OB, and told them the situation. They had me come right in, and did an ultrasound, as well as lab work to measure my HCG levels, and found that yes, they were present in my blood but very minimal, not where they should be at my stage of pregnancy, and then informed me that I was on the verge of miscarrying. I was sent home to basically wait it out and told come back two days later to make sure that I had "successfully" miscarried to be positive that I wouldn't require a D & C to prevent infection.

The next day I started bleeding very heavily, and I was in a lot of pain. I just KNEW it was happening. I went back to my OB on the second day, they did more labwork, and found that the HCG hormone was no longer present in my bloodstream, hence, the miscarriage had taken care of itself naturally.

If your friend had a simple urine test, she might not have enough of the HCG hormone in her blood to register a positive result, but she may still have levels detectable in her blood stream. I would think that her doctor would have investigated more, done an ultrasound, ran some labwork. That's what mine did, and I was even earlier in my pregnancy than your friend.

No, you're definitely not off your rocker!

well, i live on a military base and military doctors are notorious for being......well......lame.

(I once had to go to the hospital 3 times before they gave me antibiotics for cellulitis and by then i had a fever and my leg hurt so bad i couldnt walk properly)

False positives are indeed very rare. Most likely, she miscarried. I agree with HippyChickMommy that her doctor did not take this seriously enough. Please insist that she returns to the doctor (if there are any gynos on the base, I would definitely recommend seeing one over a general practitionerr) -if a miscarriage is not completed, it can be very dangerous.
