Im on the antibiotic bioxin for a sinus infection, and jeesh i think i was better off with the infection. They told me it owuld give me a metal taste in my mouth and that has happened, i can deal with it... but can antibiotics make you nauseous and screw with your tummy? I have felt a little naseous after taking them and it makes my stomach feel empty even though i am eating, it feels like when u have an empty stomach and its full of snot, like when your sick.. just a bad feeling. And yesterday i had like the worst gas pains ever, like hwen your stomach feels like its full of air... would they be causing gas too? I was just wondering if antibiotics could be causing this stuff.. im pretty sure it is since it started as soon as i began taking them. and i have 9 days left! jeesh...so should i not worry, is it just a side effect? and any tips on how to ease the side effects?
Yes, I'd say it's caused by the antiobiotics...if it's such a problem for you, maybe you should call your doc and ask for another antibiotic.
Yeah, some antibx can do all the things you said. Talk to the doc and ask him to prescribe something else. (was it erythromycin by any chance? That is some nasty stuff.) Also, take some ENTERIC COATED acidophilus. It replaces the good bacteria that some antibiotics kill off. Take the enteric coated though, because if you take regular, your stomach acid will kill the acidophilus and it won't work.
thanks for the advice... where does one find some enteric coated acidophilus? i am guessing GNC? and what is acidophilus?
Biaxin is clarithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, very similar to erythromycin. It can definately cause the symptoms you mentioned. Take it after you eat, and you can also take some Tums or Rolaids before you take it (do not take antacids with all antibiotics, especially tetracyclines or quinolones, but it is ok with macrolides). You could also try taking a Zantac 150 mg or Pepcid 20 mg 1 hour before taking the antibiotic. Also, take it with a full glass of water. Acidophilus is a probiotic. It replaces the "good bacteria" that live in your digestive system. Most pharmacies carry enteric coated acidophilus.
Thank you, Grant! I wouldn't go to GNC. I really don't like thier products too much. Try Whole Foods, or Wild Oats, or a small health food store, like Fruitful yield, or an independent health food store. Make sure you check the expiration date, as probiotics will die if they are too old. And they have to be kept in the refrigerator. I hope you are feeling better.
Also, antibiotics are notorious for causing yeast infections. The acidophilus should help ward that off, too.
