I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian, but the only problem is that I love chicken. I don't know if I could go without eating it.

I don't really know that much about becoming a vegetarian either, but I'm up to learning!

Argh I know what you mean, this past week, I've been hanging out with this serious veg head boy, and hes opened my eyes to so many things that I just never thought about... even some lollies and the like have animal bits in them... and its making me realise how much of a task it is to be a vego... and how much harder it is to be vegan

You have to be sure that you're becoming a veggie for the right reasons - I failed after five years of vegetarianism because, in the final analysis, my motivation was external. I became a vegetarian because it fit in with my picture of 'me' - I had fitted a label ('hippy') to myself, and set about finding things that agreed with that label. I wore grateful dead shirts, beads, went barefoot and so on. All of these things were just fashion accessories for my little self-image game.

I'm sure there are lots of veggies who do it out of genuine ethical commitment; equally, a lot do it because of how it makes them look to others (or themselves!). Before making such a big decision about your life, you should apply self-knowledge to try and make sure that you are not just doing it because it's 'cool'.

That's a great attitude to keep. Being a vegetarian (or vegan or fruitarian or whatever) isn't simply a yes or no; it's a continuous path of learning. So with that in mind, try it... learn a little about yourself... refine it, and see where it leads.

Now about the chicken thang. Yeah, you'll probably go thru 'meat withdrawal' for a few weeks. But as you detox your body, you'll desire it less & less. It helped me to imagine meat as if it were in a car wreck. Pretty gross. Would you eat roadkill chicken? Anyway, it's just a way of reminding yourself that this was once a life... not just a supermarket package. Good luck!

Yeah, spaceduck's right; whenever you eat meat, visualize what it used to be, and the process that led to it being in the form it is now. If you still get tempted, go and visit a slaughterhouse; most will let you see the goings on if you ask nicely and explain it's for school. But, to get the whole picture you should try and find a small-scale free-range poultryman too, and see how they do it. The more you know, the better you can decide.

Well you could always think of it as being burning dead chicken flesh.

I think the thing with the word chicken, is it doesnt differ from the word in reference to the actual animal... many people automatically think of it as nothing other than food.

I already hate eating most meats because I know that it used to be a living animal. I could never eat ribs..I just can't eat off a bone, it grosses me out wicked bad!

you cant love chicken that much... its not like its chocolate or anything...

I actually have found that figuring out things to eat... while it can be a pain, is most of the time, quite fun :)

Well I've looked at a website to read a little about it, and according to them I basically already am a semi-vegetarian.

I stopped eating meat after reading about what is put into the animals....

Most of what is injected into all of them are nothing but antibiotics. So when you eat the animal, you're eating all those medicines too....

Also, the dead animal is nothing but rotting flesh. Would you munch on a corpse that your friends just dug up? :)

Wow. Neat observation. You're right... why do they change "cow" to "beef" and "pig" to "pork"? Probably because they have cute, fuzzy faces. Have you seen the new Miracle Whip commercials where the turkeys are terrified & trying to escape? It's supposed to be funny, I think. [IMG] Imagine if they tried the same commercial with cows...

ah, remember the old chick-fila ads? a cow holding up a sign that says "eat more chicken"

to the origional poster....just keep in mind WHY you want to refrain from meat eating and allow that to be the bigger issue rather than the issue of "chicken tastes good"....you know what I mean? After some months you won't be able to even think about ingesting another animal & the smell will probably make you gag.....our bodies do conform to our mind....atleast in this instince. Good advice so far~
