I was just wondering what the rules of smoking cigerettes in amsterdam are? From what i gather there is no rules but i thought id check. I dont smoke cigerettes but i do blaze. I'm hoping that there is still lots of restaurants, clubs, pubs etc that i would beable to go to without having to breath in that discusting second had smoke from cigerettes(no offence to all you smokers out there) So hopefully someone could help me out.

And does anyone know what the rules are for smoking in barcelona?

You'll find smoking arrangements in A/dam similar to those in England, you can smoke in pretty much all bars and restaraunts , although many have non-smoking sections. In Barcelona you seem to be able to smoke virtually anywhere, from what I can recall, theres a chance you would feel out of place if you don't smoke. Some places are starting to have non-smoking areas although these are few and far between. Hope this helps a little!? Rory

I know of no bar, pub, cafe or club in Amsterdam that bans smoking. There are several resturants that have no smoking sections. Here's a link to a list from an Amsterdam resturant guide http://www.iens.nl/english/findARestaurant/index.htms

At the 1st of this year, the Netherlands did restrict smoking from many public areas such as trains, train stations and offices.

Yes, there is a new law banning smoking in ALL work places in the Netherlands. However Horeca businesses (hotels, restaurants, cafes & bars) are excused from these laws for the time being. Even if they remove this exemption they probably won't enforce it in Amsterdam, which is soooo tolerant of people's nasty habits.

And coughee shops, whose very existence depends upon some kind of smoking taking place, are unlikely to ban it.

The ban is a step in the right direction because until recently there has been NO nationwide attempts to curtail smoking, despite the health risks and costs to Dutch society. That's because Holland was one of the first countries to ship tobacco around the world, and they've made many fortunes from tobacco.

They say 38% of Dutch people smoke, making one of the biggest consuming countries in the world. Used to be they smoked roll-your-own Drum type tobacco which actually isn't too noxious, but now they prefer American brands and with all the added chemicals the smoke is far more noxious & toxic to everyone.

I wish my country would legilise it like Holland has. I mean it would bring in so much more $$$ for the economy and it would drop the Crime rate. I mean in a different way it's different to Alcohol and Ciggies but in the end it's a mind trip. is that such a bad thing to have?

This is what smoking weed in amsterdam is like, when a goddess on bike passes by you, in front of the Hostel Stadsdoelen (my fave.) and the picture is taken by your girlfriend.
