Have you ever had anything published? Be it a book, a poem, a short story, an essay, etc. What are some good places to submit to?

I had a good offer from a reputable publisher for my book Kiss of the White Scorpion, but for some reason it fell through. I've always suspected that there were certain contents that were not suitable to the political climate of 2001. My father, who worked for the media in London, confirmed my views when he said that the large publishing groups were reluctant to approach fiction about terrorism; reason being it might inflame some readers. Still, I can be honest enough with myself to think that there's also a possibility that I may not have been good enough (as you can see I'd make an excellent salesman [IMG] ) Suffice to say, however, that I put a lot of hard work in writing it and that there is a lot of pain and humor entwined in those pages. Not being one to accept the conformity that is supressed on any individuals who might dare to question the system I sought alternative methods to see my work in print. After all, I had an obligation to the people I wrote the book for: 1558 people who went missing after the Cyprus conflict of 1974. I found a great self-publishing company called Trafford and financed my own printing with the book subsequently being sold at Amazon.com. I may never reach the fame and glory of authors like Dan Brown, but when I look at my book it feels like part of the family and gives me a sense of achievement.

    That's amazing :)

I've had a story published in my college magazine, and stuck loads of stories on various websites. Haven't made a penny yet, but the iotas of glory and enough for now.

I'm doing a media writing course so the focus is on getting work published. The writers handbook is a yearly publication that lists agents/publications addresses and guidelines to submit to them. Copies should be in your local library. Well that's true of the UK, I'm sure there are equivalents elsewhere.

Where you submit would depend entirely on what you wish to publish. For a magazine just find one with the appropriate audience. Scan for submission address and, if included, guidelines* (should be on the first page). Then send your work off. Note you will probably have to wait ages for an any acknowledgement.

Don't shell out any money to be published, if they ask for money it's usually a scam or else bad investment. The whole point is they pay you.
(unless of course it's a reputable self-publishing company)

That's about all I can remember from my lectuers, will add more if I think of anything else.

    *Here are the general ones....
typed, double spaced, printed on a single side of paper (or it will not even be read)
Include page number, title and yor name in the header/footer of each page
    Send with brief cover letter

Getting published is pretty easy... it's getting paid for it that can be a bit tricky.

I've had a few pieces in political magazines, newspapers and newletters.

What kind of pieces are you looking to publish? That really governs what the best places would be.

A good place to start finding out about markets is to go to the library and take a look at The Writer's Market. If you decide you are serious, buying a copy is a good investment... if memory serves, the cost is only aroudn $25 - 30. I don't update mine often enough though (still on a 2001 copy) so it may be more.

I want to publish a book.

This is in the future, because I haven't finished the book yet, but I've been working on this story for a long time, and think that once it's done, it may be publishable. It's at least something I want to consider and get information about.

Yeah, definitely check out The Writer's Market then. The first section of the book is all book publishers and what various ones are looking for.

    And, good luck!

I have had quite a few articles published in Grass Roots magazine (this would be the downunder equivalent of Mother Earth News). My experience is as follows:
1.What you write must be news. There is little point writing what can already be found in an existing book.Research is usually very time consuming and can be costly.
    2. Write succinctly.Do not write three pages for something that could be written in one page.
3.Even though the plot and characters in a work of fiction are fictional, people do expect to have histroical details correct for the time.In other words anachronisms are generally not acceptable. The only exceptions are when it is done for comical effect such as the policeman in Mony Python and the Holy Grail.
    4. Although a work may be labled fiction, the best works of fiction are thinly disguised biographies.

It depends on exaclty what you are writing, genre, length, reading age, etc etc.

I have sold 20-30 articles and short stories and had others published free of charge. I haven't published a book with a major press but I have 2 ebook that make a few hundred pounds in royalties each per year and another contracted that I am writing now.

I f you are serious go to forums with published authors on them to get advice; I recommend the forums at absolutewrite.com.

I've been published as a ghost writer several times in technical journals and trade pulications. Once, in a national magazine. Unfourtunetly, a non-disclosure agreement is generally involved.

Rather than publication. I crave production.
