i've checked out this website before... its very good! i got a ride with a guy about a month ago, he was part of the oil & gas industry for 25 years then he decided to do water purification with his wife. They now go to 3rd world countries and teach sustainable water purification. He was saying those kinds of programs are for north american people to experience what 3rd world country people experience (in general) and do not really implicate lasting change.. I would like to be a part of a program that is working on lasting change.. i'm going to research some & see if there are any programs like that.. but that is just me! everyone needs 2 go their own way!
I guess that depends on what you mean by "lasting change". Our program is about sustainable development, such as steady income, increasing the economy and helping the environment. But even other programs that introduce the first world to the third world are having an impact. If every one from the rich world could see how 80 percent of the population live, perhaps they would make changes to better the world. Isn't that lasting change?
I have worked with the origins of this group over the last twenty years, two tours in Mozambique, one in Zambia, and one in Angola. I would say they do a good job in a difficult area. It is basically an introductory course in a hands on approach to developing aid work and is open to anybody. You can take it from there and expand upon it if you desire to. There is alot of sense to working within an organization if you can submit yourself to that. This groups' politics(at least 20 years ago) was more to my liking than others, sort of a socialist worker philosophy, but this may have changed over the years. The aim, to help those in need, still exists.
i think im going to do this program next feb. if i can get the money together, reason being that its a very accessible program it sounds like? and it sounds like a good introduction to developing aid work and it looks like that is a rarity lol...by lasting change i guess i meant something moving toward the shifting of wealth in the world, i guess for myself some kind of activism, i didnt mean to condescend the program or anything of that sort,i guess what i would be concerened about is im going to be spending a year of my life within this program right, i want the energy that i have to be put into things that are going to be able to produce real help, not building houses for a family when with some minimal help they could be doing that, but finding out ways for water to be accessible etc..legally other ways etc.. anyway it sounds very good, aids awareness is something im really attracted to in there...so yeah, thx 4 posting that!.....
volunteering is giving something of yourself to those who are less fortunate. I would really like to see america, the richest country in the world, feed its' people and give them medical help. Most countries in Africa can't do that. More money is spent by the u.s. gov't subsidizing a cow than an african has to eat on. It seems to me that the problem in america is one of allocation of resources. There is plenty to go around and all that needs to be done is have the leadership of this country do the right thing-stop the military, the war, over-consumption of precious resources. Whereas in Africa, the problems are of a different nature. We're dealing with a continent that is, for a large part, living in the stone age. Unfortunately, the example of developement, the united states, the example being followed by most of the world these days is not a pretty picture either. So yeah, change in the united states would do alot of good both here and around the world. In fact I would highly recommend it. But I wouldn't want to disuade someone from wanting to help out in other places as well. There are alot of ways to go in this world.
they should stop raping so many women. i have my own problems to deal with and i would rather give a dollar to a starving child in america than that shithole. screw
man you should get out more and try to mix with different cultures . you should really broaden your outlook towards other cultures instead of being so narrow minded with your "fuck everyone else attitude " . its not big " its pathetic.
considering i have homeboys of all different cultures, i have that part down. good, i like being ignorant haha
you said it (quote) i would rather give a dollar to a starving child in america than that shithole. couple of questions 1 = why not give a dollar to both ? . 2= why do"s it matter where a starvin child comes from ?.A STARVIN CHILD IS A STARVIN CHILD. man you seem to have racist views. listen to screw ..........no thanks.
1. because im a student who has to pay for most of my tuition, car insurance, and rent soon enough. im not gonna throw out money to everyone when i have a family. i would rather buy my mom a present than give a fuckin dollar to a stranger in africa. 2. i feel like i should worry about the problems in my country before problems across the world. yes im racist towards mayates, i hate them as a matter of fact. look that up if you dont know what that means. screw
so now you are calling starving africans gay as well as rapists ..........man what fucken planet do you live on . i am sure not all texans are as thick as pig shit.........but you and that evil bastard bush have put me off visiting texas ever. i would need eyes in the back of me head "coz screw might hear me accent "and take me life for it " being the racist he is .HATES is a strong word " look it up if you dont know what that means...........man some people .
