    namaste,

Mantras. How do you all recite them? Do you do them before, after, or even during meditation? Also, what are some good ones to try out?

I usually do it during meditation

It helps me concentrate on my breathing rather than a movie I saw last week for example

do it all the time, right now.. NOW can be a mantra.. OM, I like 'OM SHIVA SHANKARA, HARI, HARI GANGA' more of a ganja mantra, but it can be used always in my opinion... make you high on energy... regardless, everything you do should be your mantra, be it breathing, walking, sitting, staring, reading, typing, being.....
    much love

that`s one of my favorites. it is tibetan. you can chant it anytime, especially under stress.

it has been said that the oldest mantra on this planet is from the himalayan mountains region,

    OM MANI PADME HUM

pronounced: OM MA-KNEE POD- MAY WHOM

mantras are quick and easy way to gain control of our minds and that is a very necessary thing at this moment in this world. most people just do not have the space to sit down and meditate. that takes a lot of concentration, to turn off the world and get quiet.

    here`s a few other favorites:

    nam myoho renge kyho
    nam ma-yo-ho ren-gay- kyo
    that`s japanese buddhist.

    hare krishna, hare krishna
    krishna, krishna
    hare, hare

    hare rama, hare rama
    rama, rama
    hare, hare

check out the website for iskcon, the original western disciples of krishna.

    om ah hum

short and sweet tibetan buddhist mantra.

repeat these mantras over and over again for hours if need be to loosen the hold that the ego has on the mind. otherwise the mind has us helplessly in its grip. mantras are definately a good cure for insomnia or generally confused states of mind. that`s my opinion, of course some buddhist meditation people will say that mantras are only a distraction from the real work of concentrating our awareness on our breath and bodily sensations , emptying the mind and totally allowing the mind to empty itself of its usual incessant chattering.

many happy adventures on the road to enlightenment!!!

    ho!!

I don't use any mantras. As wanderingspirit mentioned, I consider them kind of counter-productive. I meditate to dissolve attachments, and relying on words doesn't fit in with that.

    Heya Sister Surf,
The hare krsna's are a group of hindu devotees that have many western members (thanks to the the efforts of their founding saint, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srilla Prabhupada), aswell as a great many devotees also in india. The actual name of the organisation is the "International Society for Krsna Consciousness" (or iskcon for short), but people generally call them "Hare Krsnas" because that is the first words of the mantra that they use most extensively (called the Maha Mantra, or Great Mantra).
Quite often, these brothers and sisiters are very noticable in a crowd (in that they wear saris, dhotis and other forms of indian clothing), but this is not always the case. They also can be noticed by their group chanting/singing (or "kirtan" as it is called in sanskrit) in and around the major cities of the world.
As has been pointed out many times on these threads, their official wensite can be found at www.iskcon.com . I think that it is always preferable to receive information from its source, than from a middleman (in this case myself), so i would advise that if you would like to know anything more about these cool guys you go to them directly (dont worry, they are pretty cool and will not force u into joining them :p)
Hope that this info can help you out in some way.

    Peace and Love

Which would make sense why mantras are commonly used in Tantra. Indulgence without attachment, for spiritual sake
