Arlo Guthrie is one of my favorite folk singers. Alice's Restraunt is one of the funniest and truest songs i think i've ever heard. anyone else?
I FUCKING LOVE ARLO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alice's Restaurant, Arlo, and Running Down the Road are three of the greatest albums I've ever heard!!!! Sorry, I got a little excited there. But he's great!
I have always loved Arlo's music. Hell, I named my kid (now 13) after him. Sadly, I haven't gotten anything since Mystic Journey, as I really started trading, and didn't remember one could buy music! I really enjoy a giftie my sweetie got for me off an auction site. the 1982 Arlo Guthrie Road Show, filmed in Austin, TX. Arlo, Pete Seeger, David Bromberg, Jerry Jeff Walker and Bonnie Raitt? oh yeah.... He's a great guy, too. Interviewed him in college....he's coming soon, I should resurrect that for the paper. Anyone catch Sarah Lee Guthrie (daughter)?
Alice's Restaurant is a damn funny song...."Officer, I can not tell a lie, I put that envelope under that garbage." haha
His daddy'd be proud. Arlo is one of a kind. I have 'Alice's Restaurant', and love it. He was great at Woodstock too... His dad........ he was the man. The grandaddy of protest songs.... hero to all my heroes. "What did they get you for?" "Litterin'" and they all moved away from me. "and causin a disturbance." and they all moved back.
These are just my suggestions, others probably have better, but here's my two cents. Start out with his 1967 album "Alice's Restaurant", then move on to "Running Down the Road" (which has coming into los angeles). If you want to hear him live, try his second album, "Arlo". It's great! "Washington County" is also a great one, and so is "Hobo's Lullaby" if you're into country-folk. I don't know much about his more recent recordings, only his early stuff. But the above are great albums, so give those a try.
wait, Nathan, we who love Arlo were the pinkos! as for good Arlo stuff, since he is all about the lyric, read the lyrics on www.arlo.net and see what ya like. I believe Mystic Journey is a good snapshot of Arlo beyond Alice's, and his live with Pete Seeger gives a good grounding in the combined folk sound. As for the "classic" Arlo, Darkest Hour always resonated for me....but as has been reported, I have these strange crushes in my past: John Denver, Arlo, Dylan, you get the drift also "Last to Leave." My son, again named for Arlo, although he needs to be not a hippe and cool, so he is Mick from his first name (Mikael Arlo) likes Oh, Mom...and sings it opointedly at me...
