OK, so my husband and I had to par down our library after we got married (we had 2 coppies of many books) and now we have 3 huge boxes of books. I wanted to do something cool to get rid of them, so how does this sound: I pick a nice day and walk around downtown Elkhart (where i live) and place them in obvious but safe places (under trees or on benches) with little post its saying "free if you'll read me". It would take all summer to get rid of them like that, but I think it might be cool. Elkhart is a pretty poor town with lots of hispanic imigrants, maybe it might help promote litteracy or help people with reading english. Or would I just be littering? Do you think people would take them? I know I would but, obviously because I'm the one that bought them in the first place I have a lot that I think people would like: Femenist Mistique, Bell Jar, Connections, A bunch of field guides for flowers and ferns and edible plants, Dante's Inferno, etc.... I love serendipity magic, like leaving hemp jewlery for people to find on trees and things like this, so this seems like a perfect way to get rid of my books. What do you all think? Thanks for the input Rowan
I think that's a great idea--that or give them to a library or something! But I like your first idea better. What's "Bell Jar" and "Feminist Mestique"?
That's a lovely thing to do I think that it's a wonderful idea... It would defenatly bring joy to my heart to find an inviting book with a note like that somewhere
Have you heard of BookCrossing? http://www.bookcrossing.com There's a big group of people doing just that, but we register our books so people who find one can see where it's been, and they are also encouraged to pass it on to the next person when they're done reading. There are labels for download, advice on how to label them, and where to leave them, and much more.
the advantage to Book crossing is if the book continues to move, and all recipients stay with BC, you can get"postcards" from the books. My last released book is in Taiwan right now. Released in Denver.
This book crossing sounds awesome. I think i will check it out. And yes that does sound like a very good idea. I wish people would do that where i live!!
