I was there for a week, during Queens day, and I love the place. I am in America, DEAland, and its so repressed. I am wondering when I can return to the great Amsterdam. Where is a a good cheap hotel that s good to stay ?
I want to come again and enjoy the cannbis, but I odnt want to pay big bucks for lodging, I want cheap, basic place to stay. Any good suggestions ?

Hotel Wintston. We got 4 nights last month for about 180 euro each and that included breakfast (hardly a full english but for free you can't complain!!). Very central aswell with plenty of coffee shops within 1 minute walking distance.

That's a fair price. I heard great stories about Winston. Every room is designed with another theme?

I've seen this place (it was beautiful) but have never stayed there.
The prices are reasonable. (23.50 euro per person per night

Yes there are some nice rooms there (Smirnoff room for example) but we ended up in one with weird things sticking out the wall (rm 407 I think) so im not quite sure what the idea was there. Still, it was clean and we wasn't in Dam for the hotel room so it was fine for us.

Just want to add here, may not apply though.
Some hostels have an upper age limit and as
Speedracer is 37+ there are one or two hostels
in Amsterdam, not all, that only accept people
    under 35.
Just thought I would quickly point this out.
Another cheap option is to do the camp site.?

I wholeheartedly recommend the Hans Brinker Hotel on Keerkstraat. It is cheap, friendly and has a bar / club open to the early hours. Dorms only...no single rooms.

It will be almost impossible to find a hotel (not hostel) that is
under €35 pp/pn. As far as hostels are concerned I have never
stayed in one but they are obviously cheaper.
Infact I have never come across any hotel in central Amsterdam
    that is under €35.

Lowest cost in Centraal I've found is Hotel Groenendael- EUR 29 single is quoted by Eurocheapo.com although hotel site says single prices by request.

    Good point Larry.

The very first trip I made to A'dam years ago I paid €65 but I planned
to take an afternoon off to solely check out other cheaper hotels.

While there, I realised not all advertise on the web or have anything
to do with the tourist board and low and behold, I came up trumps.
I found a hotel dead centre and walked in asked for the key so I could
check the room. Luckily I met the owner had a pint and managed to
barter a price with him and I now get the room every year for €35.

So the moral of the story is to physically be there and walk in off the
street to do a deal with the proprietor for a good cheap price and not
to book it off the web, etc.

Don't forget prices are cheaper off season and some hotels knock the
price up at weekends. Some will give a reduction if you decide to take
a room without a view or abstain from breakfast, TV or private shower.
A polite and decent decorum works wonders in getting a cheap room.
    It's all fundamental stuff.

good stratagies Nemesis. If nothing else it's really hard for web sites to keep up with price increases not to mention keeping prices current puts a web site at disadvantage compared to sites with outdated lower prices.

I only tried internet booking my first trip but had absolutely no luck finding a 2 star hotel for a 10 day stay in March. Out of desperation I deceided to eat my very high international long distance charges and phone my first choice- the Hotel Kap- and they had me signed up in less than 5 minutes. It turns out the Kap had a single room for only 8 days but they put me in a double the other 2 days for the single price.
That's not something the computer booking services was allowed to do. http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88693&goto=nextnewest
