Not that it's even remotely likely, but what do you think the effect of forcing people to vote would be here in America?
Stupid, it goes totaly against the idea of freedom and democracy, and also, the penalty would probably be a fine, and most people who don't vote would just pay the fine, or get the fine and never pay it.
Perhaps I should be more specific. Who do you think the non-voting people in America would vote for if voting became mandatory?
Donald Duck? Paris Hilton? Who knows? Maybe FOX could do a reality show called "American President," and get all their viewers to vote for the winner. Forcing people who don't know anything about politics to vote could be disastrous. Our electorate is stupid enough as it is, we don't need any policies that will make it even more stupid.
Why would any freedom-loving person be an advocate of so-called enforced voting? That's playing right into the hands of tyranny. Besides, what's the point of voting if you don't care enough to vote voluntarily? Chances are a person that's not concerned with voting knows little about who they're voting for.
Bad idea! if voting was mandatoy, you'd have all the popular TV shows and magazine telling the uninformed citizens who to vot for. Bush would be as popular as the atkins diet......
Actually it's less likely then you think. I know some people who were threatened to be beaten if they didn't go and vote. Not for a specific person, just in general
Showtime actually did a show like that last fall, it was allright, it was called "American Candidate".
