My 20 month old son likes to hit his head on anything in his way when he is having troubles with somthing is this normal or is it behavoir issues???I get worried because he will bang his head on the way untill a picture falls or has a huge knot on his head I am very worried and my doctor seems to have "other" issues that are more serious and said he will discuss at his 2 yr appointment....Any comments or suggestions welcome!!!!!

my toddler head bangs when he's had chemical foods. when he only eats real foods it doesnt happen.

i'd also suggest that if your doc isnt listening to your concerns that it might be a good idea to fire him and hire a competent doc who pays attention to what you're telling him/her. you know your child better than anyone else, and if you're concerned about something, it's crucial that the doc you hire (doctors are our employees) addresses your concerns.

Its not "Normal" for a child to head bang. I owuld go see another Dr about this problem its not cool that he isnt wanting to help you with it.

uh, I would think that a huge knot on his head WOULD be considered serious. Fire your doc. do some research. The food additive thing is highly underscored by a lot of medical professionals that would like you to medicate your children into submission... there are some really great recipe books out there aimed at children with bad reactions.

I really think you need more help than you will get from this forum, each child is so unique that individual observation is needed - there are so many unanswered questions - how long has this been going on? how are your living conditions? who does he spend most of his time with? is there any recent major changes? have you changed laundry detergent? have you changed his diet? are there any other children? and so on... good luck to you

uh croix does that too...I've been worried because he will scream and hit people and hurt himself. He'll attack Noah sometimes too for no reason, hes just so hyper. His father had a.d.d. and we are wondering if thats why hes misbehaving. I'd be intrested in knowing what your doctor thinks it is when you know!

My son slaps me, but he thinks it's funny. I try to get him to stop, but when other people see him do it, they laugh, so he thinks it's okay. He doesn't hit hard....most of the time....but I don't want him to think it's okay and start hitting kids at school. And I don't want to hit him back....Oy....

I might just sell him. :D

my son taylor used to do that stuff, slap, hit things, but that was a "phase", dont believe the ADD thing, its always misdiagnosed, and doctors love to prescribe the latest in behavior medicine so jonny turns out just like everyone else, take it from me, ive been in that game since iwas like 7, a product of better livng thru medication, its not right - sorry bout the ramble.

Like i said a phase, i had many talks with tay about hitting, he thoght it was funny sometimes, othertime when he was in trouble he would hit, or when he was frustrated. Now hes down frustrated, but stil its not ok and u got 2 show them that, i just spank em back and send him to his room for a bit, let him cry and scream then after 10-15 minutes he is usually screaming "Sorry Daddy" over and over till i let him out. I alwyas make him explain to me why he was in trouble, and i ask if he understnds its not OK to hit or Otherwise, then we hug, go about r day. 50-60 times of that in a month, the kid will learn, u just have to be CONSISTENT with them, public or private.

Peace Luv & Pot - MGDG

ps - sorry bout the tux, its my only digi photo ;)

Actually, whoever said that headbanging isn't normal in a toddler is wrong about that. I've worked in child care for 12 years and every toddler I've ever known has done that when frustrated or angry. Also, every child development course I've ever taken has said that it's normal. It would only be abnormal in a child of more than 5. Than it might be a sign of autisim.

Neither of my kids banged thier heads, especially to the point of bruising or raising bumps on themselves. I always knew they were abnormal!!! I'll be takin them to the doc to get them some drugs now, so they can be normal and inflict damage upon themselves.

That actually brings me to another point...not all kids bang their heads. Kids also don't know their own strength. Out of all the kids I've taken care of, only one did it to the point of bumps and bruises, so I advised her mother to take her to the pediatrician. He said that unless she gives herself a concussion it's just a phase and there's nothing anyone can do. He didn't advise drugs. She grew out of it with no lasting problems.

To the poster of this thread, just for your own reassurance I would take your child to see the pediatrician.

OK sorry I didn't read this before I posted my last post.

The second doctor sounds like he was kind of arrogant. Was he even someone with expertise in child care or development or psychology? Was he a peditrician? If so he's the worst ever! I wonder if he was just making assumptions about you.

Your son will be fine. It's just a phase. Keep us posted if anything new develops. :)
