gee, its a bit early, but I seem to be heading into my annual seven days of kidney pain HELL.
Normally this is a summer thing.
What I'm curious about is how does a layperson tell the difference between stones and infection?
The pain is dull, constant and hurts more toward the end of the day. Starts like a muscle pull sort of ache.Takes a few days to come on to full strength but goes away after five to nine days.
Not hungry while this goes on, but I slug a lot of cranberry juice and water with lemon.
ideas? advice? Can't afford the doc quite yet and have nursed this through most years.

I've not had stones, but I've had a severe infection. Basically what it felt like was having a vice around my lower back. It started out as a dull, aching pain, but eventually it got worse and worse as it went untreated. Eventually it hurt to move, even to use a muscle to scratch my face, walk, roll over in bed... everything was excrutiating. It primarily hurt in my lower back, but of course the pain wrapped around my sides and towards my stomach.

At any rate, you should go to the doctors because you can cause some serious, permanent damage. I waited almost a month to get mine checked out, and it was so severe that I now must be careful of how I treat my body (at least I'm supposed to be) because I'm now multiple times more likely than the average person to get kidney disease.

seeing I am a rainbow child and a few years back I went thrue the same thing as you, but much worse. I found out I had stones and they were surgically removed seeing they were to large to pass. It really sucked. good luck with your stones.

    Drummin',
Don't forget to take L- Acidolphlus while your taking anti-biotics. They (anti-biotics)will cause a bladder infection. Anti-biotics are non discrimemate and distroies all the friendly bacteria in your intestines which in turn will leaves the 'door' open for further infection.
Try some Cranberry/Buchu: 3 capsules 3 times a day for 7 days. Drink Lemon Water 3 times a day for the 7 days or from now on, it's good for you.

defintly drink tons of plain water too, as it supports the work of your kidney in flushing out toxins

    Hi,

I'm a little late happening on this thread, but I've had kidney stones. As far as women in my family & familial, my mom gets a lot of kidney infections & she seems to have a chronic weakness there. And of course she does the cranberry juice thing or when there's a positively ID'd infection there are only a few antibiotics she can take as she is allergic. (Is that what you rejected-- antibiotics?)

I had kidney stones a few summer ago when it was very hot, well over 100 & I was working outdoors in the heat all day. I noticed them when I started urinating little granules when I'd go. My air conditioning had gone out & I went without it for a few summers. You know here it is very hot; plus if you're stuck in a cab with no air & sweating & going in & out of AC... This happened especially when I'd get home from the outside & would drink beer, which I don't now. I was having a lot of back pain, but didn't know if it was from the work or the kidneys (or the beer). I finally called to talk to some nurses who identified them & told me to pee through a strainer & keep them. (Get this) They said alcohol was good because it clears them out. I was amazed because along with the granules I passed several that appeared huge & kept some that are the size of peas, but I saw larger. I was shocked that these can pass at all. In fact the pain during this is mainly in the back, kidneys & sides, but the urethra does become irritated. Doctors wanted to see these for some reason, but I never brought 'em in. I started to zone out one morning, like tunnel vision & dehydration I suspect. So, they were pretty surprised that I was still going to work doing a physical job in the heat because I was in really aching lower & flank back pain.

So I went to the ER, when it had gone on for about a week. They X-rayed (my kidneys & bladder) & said they had all cleared out naturally, I had passed them all. No infection. (You can pay that off in most places. X-rays are some of the cheapest things to get--like $5 each, except for the visit.) They gave me saline & fluids in case there was dehydration, & checked things were normal. I know I always read the Healthy Healing by Linda Rector Page, ND, PHD; & took vitamins & ate healthy. The only thing I can think of now & the reading I've done since was they were caused by some dehydration which made these mineral deposits crystallize. I can trace that back to (no white sugar) but a lot of vitamins that may have been in excess. Calcium, Ester-C, etc. I've heard people describe everything from Cokes to canned food, which I do not consume. But I think the bottom line is mineral deposits & heat cause a concentration of urinary fluids & these stones as a result. Oh, yes, and the crystals are very sharp & cause the pain & irritation of the nerves of the internal organs & connective tissue, back, sides, bladder, etc. About the only real bad thing I did back then was take Ibuprophen for pain, sometimes in excessive dosages or on an empty stomach. Now I don't. But if you do, take the coated ones that Target sells. The red coating is very digestive friendly more that prescription (600 mg) ones. Of course they are Nightshade extracts, so you may not want to go there.

I always drink a lot of water & especially at the time I was out in the heat I'd easily drink two quarts during working hours. As far as being minus on saline, I'd say that with the vitamins I always took, like potassium, magnesium & stuff I would have been a little plus on the salts rather than lacking.

I'm very sensitive to heat & cold & being born up North & living in the Tropics for many years doesn't help. Neither does the way the weather changes here. This doc is pretty homeopathic & calls this thermal allergies. If it is at the time of the year that you always get these I'd watch out for those temperature or climate changes that might be triggers for you. (Ever notice when there's a cold snap you have to pass urine much more frequently?--the kidneys are responsible for keeping the fluid/saline balance in your body correct. If you start or stop sweating, that throws it off, too.) Of course drink plenty of water, too like everybody said, but don't drown yourself, we're not camels. When you're thirsty you are already dehydrating. But too much water can make the renal system overwork, because it's a filtration mechanism along with the liver. I am also sensitive to too much acidity in juices. Acidity also sometimes favors bacterial growth rather than discourages it, by the way.

PS: Some areas the water tastes nasty, not because of anything besides a high content of minerals in it. This can also cause the same. I drank distilled water at this time because even Spring water can have a leaning towards the earth salts. Hope you feel better. Once was enough for me. Ultrasound is an intermediary thing & I've heard of doctors giving someone I knew some form of medication to help dissolve them, but that was an extreme case they could not pass. A teen male who they had to catheterize so he could pass urine. But I would consider anything better than any sort of incision. Sorry for the LOL, but I wanted to tell the story & hope it helps.
    :p
