At first I would be skeptical of what we can do to end this atrocity.

But, before I could even ask how, you showed me.

    So I signed the petition.

    =)

And I hope it helps (even though I am still a bit skeptical).

I signed it ages okay, and have been doing the 'click to donate' thing for the cause.
    http://babyseals.care2.com/

It's free for us (the sponsers pay for every click) and every little bit helps.

Every day I go to care2.com and there is a whole bunch of "click to donate" buttons. Rainforest, seals, tigers, primates, companion animals, etc.

    http://www.care2.com/click2donate/

doesn't take long and Sage-Phoenix is right, "every little bit helps" ;)

A bunch of americans signing an online petition is not going to do anything to stop this. You live in canada, If you feel so strongly about it dedicate yourself to it.

Oh it'll do something. But probably not much. But since we (speaking for all non-Canadians) don't live in Canada, that's about all we can do. =( If we dedicated ourselves to changing it, we still wouldn't solve anything.

ya right.........as if. those pups are skinned alive so pro athletes and models can spend $5000 on a coat that will flaunt and proclaim their big bux.... poor people... he he he, like the actual sealers, who get maybe a couple bux per skin.
if they at least made use of the whole pup it would be better. but they don't, they just want the skin.

Hmmmm, did it occur to you that by purchasing the skins for large sums of money you help Canada's economy? Which would in turn help those who are less privaleged. Think it through before replying.

Hmmmm, did it occur to you that by helping Canada's capitalist economy, you're just prolonging the fact that 98% of the economy's money goes to only 5% of its population?

    Think it through before replying.

I love you man. thanks for that. It made me laugh, and I bet you are being conservative with your numbers, I bet its more like 2 % of the population.
I know one group that sure doesn't seem to be seeing any of the spoils of our butchery of baby seals....and here is the news article I saved that talks about it.
The town they are talking about is 20 minutes from my house.

    Author: Chantelle Cherise Dooley

    Published on: June 1, 2003

In Canada, approximately 5 percent of the population is made up of aboriginal people (1.5 million to be exact); half of these are women. But even though native women make up only 2.5% of the nation’s populace, they are five times more likely to die a violent death than any other group of Canadian women. (1) In an article written by Lisa Morry for the Chilliwack Times in 2002, the journalist reported on the discovery of female remains on a pig farm in British Columbia. 50 women had gone missing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. More than half of these women were of aboriginal descent. The rest of the nation remained, and still remains, uninformed.
In 1992, three aboriginal women were brutally murdered in Saskatchewan, their bodies stabbed, raped, strangled, even dismembered. To this day, their murderer, John Martin Crawford, is virtually an unknown criminal in Canada. Having murdered four women in his lifetime (and the number may be higher), he is listed as a serial killer. In this country, he ranks second only to the prolific child serial killer Clifford Olson. And yet, his arrest, trial and conviction were just a tiny bleep on the media’s radar. Another serial killer was being prosecuted that year: the infamous Paul Bernardo. He killed nice middle class girls with his beautiful Barbie-doll wife and video-taped the crimes so that he could watch them over and over again. Apparently that was real news. Well, it was certainly sensationalism, to say the least.
In his book, Just Another Indian, A Serial Killer and Canada's Indifference, Warren Goulding wrote about the 1992 trial of John Martin Crawford. In it, he quotes the prosecutor as saying, “Looking at it objectively, there is no reason why the Paul Bernardo case should have received more publicity than the John Martin Crawford case.” (2) But, as I said, the victims were young, thriving and pretty middle-class girls. Bernardo’s co-conspirator was his beautiful, blonde wife.
The missing women in Vancouver are most likely all prostitutes and the majority of them are native. In addition to their vulnerability to sexual and violent predators, aboriginal women share the illustrious honour of being the lowest paid segment of society in Canada. In a pamphlet released by the government of Saskatchewan during the 1990’s, it was detailed that the average native woman in Saskatchewan earned approximately $6,000 per annum. This is well below the provincial and national averages. The poverty level for a single person is approximately $18,000 per annum. Feminism has been criticized for many years as a sort of “poor little rich girl” movement, or, at the very least, “a poor, little, middle-class, white girl” movement. When we look at the predicament of the native woman in Canada, it becomes clear that there is more than just a little validity to this criticism. That is not to say that body image, eating disorders and the “glass ceiling” aren’t important issues for women to discuss and struggle against. They are. But we seem to forget that there are some women who are not just pushing the limits of the system in order to allow women onto the illustrious fast-track. There are women who are so unrecognized by society it doesn’t matter how beautiful, or unbeautiful, they are. There are some women who are still in the trenches. Their husbands make up the largest percentage of Canadian prisoners. Their children often live in poverty. Sometimes they need to sell anything they can to survive, including themselves. Yes, there are some women still in the trenches. And they are not in some distant third world country. They are right here in one of the highest ranked nations on the planet. They are living two blocks down from us; they are living in a different world. On the prejudiced streets of Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan, there is a name for the mostly native area of the city: They call it Moccasin Flats. Racism and sexism, it seems, are still very much alive in Canada. Especially for the nation’s unseen women.
We need to remember the statistics: Only 2.5 percent of the population, yet five times more likely to die a violent death than any other group of Canadian women; the lowest-paid segment of the Canadian population, earning, on average, only $6,000 every year. More than just remembering, however, we need to do something about it.

Hmmm, sounds like you think capitalism is wrong. Please explain to me how the capitalalistic United States is still around and a world power, and why the Soviet Union is not.

    Capitalism lasted, and Socialism failed.

Communism is useless. It takes away the hard earned money from the rich, and gives money to the lazy. If everyone is equal and you do not benefit from anything, what motivation do you have to do anything more than the next man?

One man can be a doctor, go through all the education it requires, and be no better off that the man who sells flowers in his little flower shop. There's motivation for you!

you horrible little person. did you ever think of the atrocities that contribute to the creation of poor, homeless people?

one is the fact that ever since this war has been put into effect, it's damn near impossible to find a job.

secondly, what about people with mental disorders? i saw a show recently about a man who became sick with schizophrenia and because of it, he had lost his job, all of his money, and became homeless. so we should damn people who have these problems because they're SICK?!

by the way, I'm an american and in no way do I support the "american way"....we don't deserve to be as powerful as we are.. the reason we got to be as powerful as we are has nothing to do with capitalism....it's because our leaders are fucking imperialists who damn near try to control the rest of the world and their affairs. and by no means is that right. in any way.

Because we are Imperialistic? Would you care to tell me how fighting off Japanese forces is imperialistic? America's true power begun in WWII. Defending against the Japanese led to the devolopment of the atom bomb. That ended the war and saved thousands of lives by making an invasion unnecessary. Afterwards, the Cold War began and we competed with the Soviet Union. Our power continued to grow as we battled socialism. Socialism does not work. When you comare the economies of America with the economies of a socialist country, like... Cuba for example. Or the anceint Soviet Union, capatilism is better.

Capitalism is freedom. That is another aspect of how America became great. We are free to do as we wish.

Capitalism did defeat socialism, because one of the reasons the Soviet Union fell was because their economic system was failing. Reforms were made giving them a step towards capitalism.

When you say we try to control the world... are you referring to interferring with other world events? Events like... WWI and WWII? Or when we declared our support for Israel?

One of the jobs of our leaders is to look after America's best interests. Economically, socially, and politically. If what is good for us is good for others, then it's perfect. But to our leaders, we are their responsibility, and we come first.

Damn near impossible to find a job? I got one just the other day. And if you can do your job better than anyone else, its yours. When you don't hired for a job, then it is because you are not NEEDED. You are not QUALIFIED enough. There is someone who can do your job better than you.

The atrocities that contribute to the creation of poor, homeless people? The fact that they have probably screwed up. Lost their job because of their incompetence? If you want to keep a job in the world, then you better make sure you do your job better than everyone else. Make it so the company cannot afford to lose you. If you are not needed, then you are just draining a company of money.

By the way Apples+Oranjes, I am enjoying our little debates here and there. Just letting you know I'm not saying anything as a personal attack, just respect.

Not to mention that there would be alot more jobs for the poor of our country if we would just close the damn border...The bums would be able to wash dishes or dig holes if all the Mexicans weren't able to hop on a truck and get into our country as they please. Of course most bums are perfectly happy not working.
