Hi, What can you people tell me about Prince Edward Island ? I've read on the Internet about it but I need to hear something from a real person because there's a strong possibility I'm going there for undergraduate studies (at The University of Prince Edward Island also known as UPEI) in this fall. To me the place seems remote and peaceful but I do not know much about it. Are there any hiking trails ? How easy is to get from PEI to New Brumswick or Nova Scotia ? Which is the biggest town/city in the vicinity of PEI ? I hope that you can answer these questions and also tell me more. I'm from Romania so I've never been to the united states or canada.:& Thanks.
I live in new brunswick but my grandfather is from pei so I always go there every summer. Pei is a beautiful place. with lots of beaches and camp sites, it takes about 3 hours to get from new brunswick to pei across the bridge. there is a fairy that goes between nova scotia and pei. charlottetown is the capital, city i dont know if its the biggest, i usualy spend my time in georgetown its at the very tip and charlottetown is central, I've neevr really been there in the winter except for a hockey tournament once, in the summer its rather busy with tourists but in the winter its very quiet. I cant really remember much else I havent been there for a while, hope I helped some
thanks for your reply three hours to get from NB to PEI across the bridge ? that's a lot of time i thought it should not take more than half an hour
no not on the bridge the whole time, the bridge takes about a half hour, lol Im such I liar I told you how long it takes to get from saint john to pei sorry
in answer to your query ...UPEI is on university avenue in charlottetown ...quait city ..it is the biggest city on the island but not very big by world standards ..be prepared for the friendliness of the people ..prince edwards island is as well know for it<s anne of green gables as it is for their friendliness...i live about 40 kilometers as the crow flies from the island...but warning ..if you go there you might not want to ever leave again ..the university itself is of as high a standard as you will ever find including.cost of living compared to another center in canada is cheap..new brunswick has many hiking trails as does nova scotia ...not to be missed in nova scotia is cape breton ..it has to be seen...hope you enjoy your stay
PEI is a pretty relaxed and quite place. Not too many crazy things happen around here. Especially in my area, a tiny little fishing village in the eastern region of the island. UPEI is a pretty decent university. I went there for two years and loved every minute of it. I met a lot of really interesting people and didn't find the school work too hard. Directly across from the university is a farmer's market....some of the tastiest food around, and a great spot to meet people. As for the island itself, there are a few trails but you'll have more fun if you venture off on your own. It's a pretty small place so chances of getting lost are pretty slim. letstakeourtime is right about the scenery......the beaches are wonderful. I spent a whole month of last summer camping on the beach and it was amazing! If you are an out-doorsey kind of person, there are plenty of things to do year round. Canoeing, swimming, camping, snowshoeing, skiing.......and the list goes on. I hope that you do get a chance to spend some time here, I've lived on the island for my whole life and am quite content....ahhhh....livin' the peaceful life.
hi again. knitin.chick i have a question about UPEI: how many courses per semesters do students usually take ? I hope you can remember this detail And I also have another question about PE: Is there a public bus system that links PE with NB and NV ? Am I dead without a car ?
hi ya! students usually take 5 courses per semester (for full time student status) and i do believe that there is a shuttle and there is some talk of developing some sort of public transportation. i walked everywhere when i went to university...the grocery store is almost directly across the street from the university and downtown is, at the most a 15 min walk. plus, you meet so many people......if you need a ride, chances are you will find someone going in that direction or you could take my approach....i was an avid hitch-hiker. lol.
Hi again!! thanks for all replies !! can you try to tell me 'the bad things' about this place? what are the inconveniences of living there besides the cold winter ? Thank you in advance.

All I know about Prince Edward Island is that The Anne books were set there. ie Anne of Green Gables.
after reading them about fifty million times when I was a kid I reckon I could almost give you a guided tour!!! anyone care to debunk the setting these books described?
the bad things, hmmm..........personally, i don't see a lot of bad things about PEI. then again...being born and raised here, i am a little biased.....we'll if you eat a special diet, i'll use vegan as an example because i am one, the selection of vegan foods in grocery stores is very limited compared to larger places. the way that i've gotten around it is learning good ol' homestyle cooking with a twist, and some interesting substitutions in recipies. PEI is a pretty rural place....it takes about 15 minutes max. to drive from one side of our capital city to the other durring "rush hour." also, you can drive 20 minutes in any direction and reach a place that you can swim at when the weather is nice ( a slight exageration but not by much. lol). there is an abundance of good fresh food to eat here....lots of farms and lots of fish, if you're into eating it. living around here can be expensive in the summer time....prices tend to jack up durring tourist season, but mainly on the western end of the island. the people are generally friendly. there aren't a whole lot of things open 24 hours a day.....the odd gas station/convenience store and subway restaraunt in charlottetown, else where, everything is usually closed by 10 or 12. bars close at 2 am and if you're hanging out on kent st., blossoms, a pretty tasty chineese restaraunt, is open after 2 am for all the bar hoppers to get some munchies and head home.
Theres alot of heavy drinkers out east, but I don't know if you consider that good or bad. The earth is red, its really neat.
in answer t your question about buses ..yes there are buses that run to NB and i presumed you meant nova scotia too ..there are buses there too ..there are also daily flights out of charlottetwon that link up with the rest of the world
Hi I am kind of surprised to see a thread about my province on here, we are often over-looked! I am planning to move soon, I don't like it here at all. But I grew up here so it is hard when everyone knows everyone or at least knows someone you know. The weather is cold most of the year. It is more of a tourist destination really. People are generally conservative so that's a downside. If you are coming here to live, I would move to downtown Charlottetown.
